Augustana finishes non-conference portion of schedule this week

This week: The Augustana soccer team will finish out its non-conference portion of the 2010 schedule with three matches this week.  The Vikings travel to Nebraska-Kearney on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match and then make the trek to St. Cloud, Minn., for the Northern Sun Festival where they face Minnesota State Moorhead on Friday at 5 p.m. and Minnesota, Crookston on Sunday at 11 a.m.  Both Northern Sun Festival matches are non-conference contests.

Series records: Tuesday's meeting with Nebraska-Kearney will be the first contest between the two schools.  Friday's tilt with Minnesota State Moorhead  will be the eighth match in a series that Augustana leads 6-1 (all-time scores vs. MSUM).  It will be the ninth time Augustana and Minnesota, Crookston have met on Sunday.  The Vikings are 7-1 against the Golden Eagles (all-time scores vs. UMC).

Northern sunshine on my shoulder:  The Northern Sun festival features four conference teams and is hosted by St. Cloud State.  Augustana hosted the event last year and finished 1-1, winning a double-overtime match with SCSU 4-3 and falling to Winona State 2-0.

We'll do it live:
Host St. Cloud State will provide live statistics for all of the matches at the Northern Sun Festival.  Click on the following links to track both of Augustana's matches live: Augustana vs. MSUM; Augustana vs. UMC.

Last time out: The Vikings came up on the short end of a pair of close matches this past weekend in Golden, Colo.  On Friday, Mesa State edged Augustana 1-0; the Vikings failed to chart a shot on goal in the loss.  Fort Lewis outlasted the Vikings in a two-overtime affair on Sunday, scoring in the 104th minute to grab a 1-0 victory.

Seeing double: Sunday's double-overtime match with Fort Lewis is a situation Augustana is familiar with.  The Vikings found themselves in seven double-over time contests last season.  Augustana has played in a total of 19 double-overtime matches in program history, posting a 2-3-14 record in that scenario.

The elders: Augustana returns 20 players to this season's roster. Among them are sophomore Jessie Huff (Apple Valley, Minn.) and junior Kate Timmons (Overland Park, Kan.) who were named 2010 Preseason Players to Watch in the 2010 NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll. Huff scored seven goals last season, while Timmons recorded one assist.

The coach: Augustana head coach Brandon Barkus enters his fifth season on the Vikings sideline in 2010. Barkus owns a record of 33-36-10 at Augustana. In 2008 Barkus' squad put together the most successful season in school history, finishing 13-6-1 and 10-3 in NSIC play. The 2008 team also made the NCAA Division II tournament for the first time in school history. Barkus is assisted by Clay Glasgow and Dale Weiler.

According to the coaches:
The Vikings were selected to finish sixth in the annual NSIC preseason poll, which was voted on by the 14 head coaches. Augustana received 104 points in the poll. Winona State's nine first-place votes and 162 points led them to nab the top spot, while Minnesota State, Minnesota Duluth, St. Cloud State and U-Mary also came in ahead of the Vikings.
