Augustana clinches double-overtime victory over Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. - Augustana's Yuriy Malashenko hit a 3-pointer with three seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime and help the Vikings pick up a 79-76 double-overtime victory over Wayne State Saturday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate victory in Wayne, Neb.

The Vikings are now 10-5 (7-4 NSIC). WSC falls to 9-6 (5-6 NSIC).

The game was tied at 60-60 at the end of regulation and 67-67 after the first overtime period. Augustana's Derrick De Zeeuw hit a free throw with six seconds left in the first overtime to tie the game. He missed his second attempt, which would have given the Vikings the lead.

Augustana outscored WSC 12-9 in the final overtime period to seal the win.

Cody Schilling led all scorers with 25 points; he also added 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Cameron McCaffrey (15) and De Zeeuw (10) were also in double figures for the Vikings.

Amry Shelby collected 25 points for WSC, which played its fourth overtime game this season.

The last time Augustana played a double-overtime game was on Jan. 10, 2008, when Nebraska-Omaha topped the Vikings 98-97.

The Vikings shot 50.0 percent for the second straight game. They finished 24 of 54 from the field.

The Vikings began action with an 11-0 run behind the lead of McCaffrey, who scored four points.

At 16:23, McCaffrey drilled a 3-pointer and at 12:15 hit a jumper to put Augustana ahead by 11 points each time.

WSC managed to erase the deficit by working the rest of the half on a 12-3 run, which left the Vikings up by just one at 26-25 with 3:50 left before intermission.

Ryan Rudloff nailed a 3-pointer at 3:10 to give WSC a 29-28 lead.

WSC led 33-31 at the half.

The Wildcats were 53.8 percent from the field in the opening half. Augustana was 42.9 percent.

McCaffrey led all scorers at the half with 13 points. Shelby led the WSC with nine points.

In the first three minutes of the second half, Schilling was the only Viking to get points on the scoreboard for Augustana, making a pair of free throws and a jumper. The Vikings found themselves trailing 39-33 after Schilling's buckets.

Augustana got its first lead in the half at 12:30 after Schilling scored four points to give his team a 46-45 advantage.

Another jumper by Schilling ended a three-minute drought of scoring from both teams at 5:14 and allowed Augustana to go ahead 52-49.

The Vikings owned a four-point lead with just less than two minutes left, but Shelby erased the deficit after hitting a 3-pointer and a free throw with 38 seconds remaining.

Shelby then went to the line with 12 seconds left in the game to give WSC a 60-57 lead.

Malashenko drained a wide-open 3-pointer with three seconds left to send the game into overtime with the score knotted at 60-60.

In the first overtime period, Augustana trailed 67-66 with six seconds left, but DeZeeuw made 1 of 2 free throws to conclude overtime action with a 67-67 tie.

Augustana put together a six-point run in the second-overtime period to put the Vikings ahead 75-69. WSC's Vontrell Seroyer, however, hit a 3-pointer with a minute remaining.

The Vikings' last four-points came from Hettermann and Schilling at the foul line.

Seroyer hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for WSC, but Augustana had already clinched the game and concluded action with a 79-76 victory.

Augustana outrebounded WSC 40-32. It was the fourth straight game the Vikings have outrebounded their opponent by at least eight boards.

Next weekend the Vikings host Upper Iowa and Winona State.
