Schilling, Augustana win overtime thriller over Winona State

BOX SCORE

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Cody Schilling drilled a 3-pointer as time expired in regulation to send the game to overtime and scored a career-high 37 points to lead Augustana past Winona State 95-90 Saturday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference basketball in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The win moves Augustana to 12-5 (9-4); Winona State drops to 13-4 (9-4 NSIC).

Schilling was spectacular, scoring his 37 points on 11 of 20 shooting from the field and 13 of 14 shooting from the charity stripe. After the junior canned the 3-pointer to push the game to overtime, he proceeded to score six points in the extra period to lift the Vikings to the win.

It was the second overtime win of the season for Augustana, which two weeks ago defeated Wayne State in a double-overtime affair.

Cameron McCaffrey added 18 points in the Viking win, Leif Nomeland had 14. Yuriy Malashenko logged a double-double, scoring 11 points and snagging 11 rebounds.

Clayton Vette had 26 points to pace WSU.

The Vikings trailed by four points with 17 seconds left, but McCaffrey made a layup at the 10 second mark. Augustana fouled on the inbound, but Ben Fischer missed the second of his two resulting free throws, allowing the Vikings to take the ball the length of the floor.

Schilling nailed his 3-pointer from just to the right of the top of the key with less than a second left.

The Vikings outscored the Warriors 15-10 in the overtime period to seal the win. Schilling had six of those points; a total of nine came on free throws.

The game was tight--at least on paper. WSU shot 47.6 percent from the floor, while Augustana shot 46.2 percent. The Viking outrebounded the Warriors 39-38. Both teams got to the line 31 times, and both shot more than 36 percent from behind the arc.

The game featured 11 lead changes.

Early on it, the Warriors were the recipients of the lead. WSU jumped out to an early advantage, using an 11-2 run to fill the first three minutes of the contest.

Seven minutes later, the Warriors had stretched their benefit to 10 points on a pair of Jon Walburg free throws.

But the Vikings went to work. Sparked by a dunk from Derrick De Zeeuw, Augustana scored eight unanswered points and trailed by just two at 23-21 with eight minutes until the break.

The Warriors returned their lead to eight points in the next four minutes, but a 10-2 run from the Vikings--eight of which came from Schilling--knotted the game at 35-35 at halftime.

Schilling had 12 points at intermission. He was 8 of 8 from the free throw line.

Augustana led for most of the first 10 minutes of the second half, but WSU nudged back enough to take a lead at the 9:38 mark after Vette sank two free throws to make it a 55-54 contest.

The Warriors led inside the five minute mark until Schilling's 3-pointer extended the game.

The shot served as a spark for the Vikings, who rode the momentum into overtime and eventually to to the thrilling victory.

Augustana entered the game 7-7 in overtime games since the 2000-01 season.

The win was the Vikings' sixth straight.  It also puts them in a tie for second in the latest NSIC standings.

Augustana is on the road next weekend, traveling to Concordia University, St. Paul and St. Cloud State.
