Megan Doyle's jumper with two seconds left was off the mark and allowed Bemidji State to retain its 79-78 lead as the Beavers upset No. 21 Augustana Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference basketball in Bemidji, Minn.
Augustana drops to 13-3 (6-3 NSIC). BSU improves to 5-7 (2-6 NSIC).
Megan Doyle and
Molly Hayes were the only Vikings in double-figure scoring, each tallying 23 points. The duo also collected seven assists each.
Colleen McKay and Anna Hebrick each had 18 points for the Beavers.
BSU shot 47.6 percent from the floor in the win, including a scorching 51.6 percent in the second half.
The Vikings shot 38.1 percent.
Doyle,
Alex Feeney and
Kristi Board kicked off scoring for the Vikings to pull ahead 8-5 early into the contest. The score remained stalemated for just more than three minutes until a a pair of Beaver free throws by Anna Hebrink at 13:32 cut BSU's deficit to just one.
Despite knots in the score at 11:43 and 9:52, the Vikings were able to hold on to the lead until BSU's Hebrink hit a 3-pointer at 7:33 to take a 27-25 lead over Augustana.
A layup by Hayes gave the Vikings their last advantage in the half, but it was quickly diminished as the Beavers hit a jumper followed by a 3-pointer to go up 33-29 with less than five minutes of play left in the half.
The Vikings trailed 38-33 at the break, marking just the third time this season Augustana has not held the lead at the half.
Beavers shot 43.8 percent and made 6 of 12 3-pointers in the opening half.
Hayes scored 13 first-half points for the Vikings.
By 17:33 in the second half, BSU had built a five-point lead three different times.
The BSU lead grew to as large as nine when Samantha Baldwin hit a free throw to go up 54-45.
Augustana then went on a 10-2 run, and at 12:08,
Tessa Wilka drilled a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 56-55.
Back-to-back layups by Doyle and Hayes brought the Vikings ahead by three and gave Augustana the lead for the first time in the second half.
BSU regained the lead for four minutes until the 6:36 mark when Doyle tied the score at 69-69 off a layup.
Four minutes later, Hayes tied game by hitting a free to make it 75-75.
A layup by BSU's Colleen McKay with 16 seconds left gave the Beavers a lead of four. Doyle answered with a 3-point play with nine seconds left.
Leading by one, Baldwin went to the line for BSU with eight seconds remaining and missed the front end of a bonus, allowing Doyle to drive the length of the court for what would have been the go-ahead bucket with two seconds left.
Augustana travels to Minnesota Duluth tomorrow for a 2 p.m. contest.
