SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Southwest Minnesota State combined for 50 kills on its way to a 3-0 (25-15,26-24,25-19) victory over Augustana Friday evening in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference volleyball.
The Mustangs improve to 13-4 (7-1 NSIC), while the Vikings drop to 10-6 (4-4 NSIC).
Both Augustana and SMSU had eight team blocks in the match.
Brooke Lewko and
Jordan Spatenka led the team with eight kills and
Kayla Wallerich recorded 30 assists.
Wallerich also led the team in digs with 14.
SMSU jumped on a 9-2 lead to open the first set. The Vikings never recovered from the deficit and the Mustangs took the set 25-15, hitting .333 with 12 kills.
The Vikings hung closer to SMSU in the second set, gaining their first lead of the match at 4-3 on a Mustang attack error. The teams continued to exchange leads throughout the set and at 21-21, Augustana won three-straight points. The Vikings had their chance to take the set after
Courtney Ysker fired a kill with a 23-22 lead, but SMSU fought back and took the next four points for a 26-24 victory.
SMSU gained even more strength in the final set of the night, hitting .400 with 22 kills. The Viking couldn't manage to keep a lead and SMSU finished off Augustana 25-19.
SMSU allowed the Vikings to hit just .128 in the match.
Augustana hosts No. 19 Minnesota State tomorrow at 3 p.m.
