No. 19 Minnesota State outlasts Augustana

- No. 19 Minnesota State used 27 kills from Chelsea Fogarty to edge a 3-2 (25-21, 25-27, 27-29, 25-16, 15-11) victory over Augustana Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference volleyball.

MSU improves to 11-6 (5-4 NSIC) and the Vikings drop to 10-7 (4-5).

Holly Hafemeyer smashed 17 kills on 49 attacks with just two errors to hit .306 for Augustana.

Lindsey Petersen was also in double-digit kills with 14 and led the team in digs with 19. Jordan Spatenka fired 15 kills.

Kayla Wallerich tallied a career-high 53 assists.

MSU recorded 82 kills hit .249 in the match.

The Vikings were on fire to open the afternoon and jumped on a 5-2 lead in the first set. Petersen had two kills and Taylor Hrdlichka recorded another at 10-8 to give Augustana a four-point lead. MSU came back strong and took a 15-13 advantage after winning seven-straight points. MSU recorded an attack error at 21-19 to cut the Vikings deficit by just one. The Mavericks then used three-straight kills to take a 24-20 lead. In an effort to come back, Spatenka recorded a kill, but it was not enough as Fogarty gave MSU the set off a kill.

Augustana lost its 5-2 advantage in the second set when MSU went on a four-point run. The score continued to remain tightly knit until the Mavericks took six-straight points to lead 16-8. The Vikings continued to trail behind MSU and at 22-16 Augustana used a string of Maverick errors to cut deficit by just two. Augustana continued to battle and used a kill apiece from Hafemeyer and Wallerich as well as a MSU attack error to take a 25-24 lead. MSU had two errors for the Vikings to take the set 27-25.  

The Vikings tied the score at 13-13 after Wallerich smashed a kill and Petersen recorded a service ace. MSU quickly stole the lead back and continued to keep it until Spatenka had a kill for a 25-24 Augustana advantage. Hrdlichka began a Viking rhythm, recording a kill to knot the score 27-27. Augustana took the next point on a Maverick error and Hrdlichka fired a kill for a 29-27 Viking victory.

MSU came out with determination in the fourth set and won five-straight points for a 12-8 advantage. The Mavericks tallied 22 kills and hit .419 in the set to run away with a 26-15 victory.

The Vikings hung close to MSU in the final set and Spatenka registered her 15 kill of the match to tie the score 6-6. The Mavericks stole the next two points and Augustana managed to tie the score again at 8-8. After a tie at 9-9, MSU gained strength and recorded three-straight points. The Mavericks finished off the set 15-11.

The Vikings hit .199 in the match with 60 kills.

MSU had 12 team blocks, while the Vikings recorded 11.

The Vikings continue home action next Friday and Saturday against Minnesota State Moorhead and Minnesota, Crookston, respectively.
