MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Oregon rallied from a 14-point first-half deficit and saddled No. 16 Augustana with a 60-58 loss--its first of the season--Saturday evening at the WOU/Phoenix Inn D2 Shootout in Monmouth, Ore.
WOU moves to 3-1; Augustana falls to 2-1.
Trailing by two points with the ball and 42 seconds left, the Vikings missed three field goals, including a pair of 3-pointers that could have given them the lead.
Blair Wheadon's game-high 20 points paced the Wolves.
Cody Schilling led Augustana with 16 points, while
Drae Murray scored 11, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out six assists.
Cameron McCaffrey contributed nine points, and
Brennan Olson logged a career-high eight points.
The Vikings drilled 10 3-pointers in the loss.
Augustana jumped out to a 10-point advantage within the first 10 minutes of the contest and led 20-10 with 10:11 left before the break.
Sparked by a pair of 3-pointers from Schilling and Murray, the Vikings extended their advantage to 14 points at 28-14 four minutes later.
The Wolves closed the first half on a 14-0 run to tie the contest at 28-28 at the break.
The two teams traded leads for much of the second half.
A McCaffrey 3-poiner with 4:02 remaining gave the Vikings a 58-54 lead, but from there, the Wolves went on to score the game's final six points.
Augustana's final and game-ending possession lasted 42 seconds.
The Vikings got to the charity stripe just seven times, while WOU made 17 trips.
Augustana hosts Dakota State Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
