Haley, Vikings earn five-set win over Upper Iowa

- Dani Haley handed out 64 assists and Jordan Spatenka smashed a career-high 25 kills to lead Augustana to a 3-2 (20-25, 25-17, 25-15, 24-26, 15-8) win over Upper Iowa Friday evening in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference volleyball in Sioux Falls.

Augustana moves to 15-11 (9-9 NSIC) and UIU drops to 14-13 (7-10 NSIC).

The Vikings had two other players set career highs with Mikayla Gallagher recording 18 kills and Kayla Wallerich digging up 30 balls. Haley was just one assist shy of tying her career record.

Augustana had its last chance at grabbing a lead at 12-12 in the opening set but UIU took advantage of the opportunity, stealing the next three points en route to its victory. The Peacocks outhit the Vikings .441 to .275.  

The Vikings took advantage of UIU's errors in the second set, taking their last four points off the Peacocks' mistakes.

UIU was no match for Augustana in the third set as the Vikings blew past the Peacocks with a .517 attack percent.

In the fourth set, UIU came back to battle as the score tied a total of 13 times. UIU held the advantage throughout most of the set as the Vikings only captured the lead three times. At 24-24 the Peacocks recorded a kill followed by a Vikings error to push Augustana to a fifth set.

The Vikings dominated in the final set, winning 11 of its 15 points off kills.

Augustana hit .314 and UIU recorded a .207 hitting percent in the match. Both teams recorded eight blocks.

Augustana hosts Winona State at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow.
