Hot hitting sparks Viking win over Winona State

- A combined 39 kills from Holly Hafemeyer and Jordan Spatenka led Augustana to a 3-0 (33-31, 25-16, 25-18) victory over Winona State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference volleyball Saturday in Sioux Falls.

Augustana improves to 16-11 (10-9 NSIC); WSU falls to 13-15 (7-11 NSIC).

Dani Haley put up 50 assists, helping the Vikings to a season-high .344 attack percent.

Kayla Wallerich had 14 digs to lead Augustana.

Neither team could gain a secure advantage in the first set with the score tying a total of 16 times. Hafemeyer recorded her 13 kill of the set to bring the Vikings ahead 32-31. Augustana secured its win off a Warrior attack error. The Vikings had 24 kills in the set and hit .400, holding WSU to a .296 attack percent with 23 kills.

The second set opened with a 9-3 Viking lead and Augustana continued to shutdown the Warriors throughout the set with Spatenka tallying nine of Augustana's 17 kills. The Vikings outhit the Warriors .295 to .087.

WSU began the third set with a 4-2 lead and Augustana took it over after a Warrior error gave the Vikings a 7-6 advantage. The teams battled point for point until the Vikings won seven of the next eight points after a 9-9 tie in the score. Augustana continued to roll and finished off the match winning three-straight points from a pair of kills by Hafemeyer and a service ace from Julia Witt.

Hafemeyer had a career-high 23 kills in the match and hit .583. Spatenka was equally as impressive with 16 kills off 35 attacks and no errors to hit .457.

Kate Horihan led WSU with 14 kills. Kayla Uhlenhake helped the Warriors hit .175 with 37 assists.    

Augustana closes NSIC action next Friday, hosting Wayne State at 7 p.m.
