LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Augustana defeated Western New Mexico 5-4 and followed that with a 10-0 victory over Chadron State that went just five innings in its season opening day at the Desert Stinger in Las Vegas, Nev.
In the Augustana-WNMU match-up
Jenny Brown led the Vikings with two hits while
Chelsey Durland,
Kelsey Kalkman and
Theresa McMahon recorded one RBI each.
WNMU earned the first three runs of the game before the Vikings had Brown and Murray score the third inning.
Traci Fransen tied the score at 3-3 in the fifth inning when she scored off an error by WNMU's third baseman. Brown and McMahon also found home plate to give Augustana a 5-3 lead.
In the final inning, Alisha Wyckoff scored for WNMU, but it wasn't enough as Brittney Batten grounded out, leaving three players on base.
Theresa McMahon picked up another three hits in Augustana's game against CSC, while
Elizabeth Murray, Fransen and
Chelsi Winskowski each had two hits. Durland also added a hit.
McMahon led off scoring in the first inning to give the Vikings an early advantage.
Another five runs were added by the Vikings in the second inning.
A scoreless third inning was followed by an eventful fourth inning where Augustana picked up another pair of runs.
Ashley Meyer struck out three CUC players, leaving the eagles unable to score during their turn at bat in the fourth inning.
McMahon scored her third run of the game in the fifth inning to bring the score to 10-0 and close the game.
The Vikings continue action tomorrow against Montana State Billings, Fort Lewis and Adams State.
