BOX SCORE
BISMARCK, N.D. – U-Mary erased a 13-point second-half deficit and outscored Augustana 14-9 in overtime to collect a 99-94 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over the Vikings Saturday night in Bismarck, N.D.
U-Mary improves to 12-11 (9-10 NSIC); Augustana falls to 18-8 (11-8 NSIC).
Augustana had it largest lead of the game—13 points—with 16 minutes left.
The Viking loss came despite school-record 19 3-pointers from Augustana. The previous team record for 3-pointers was 16. That happened on two occasions--the first on Nov. 25, 2005, against Puerto Rico-Bayamon and the second on Dec. 5, 2006, against Presentation.
Ali Collins and Rachel Zillmer each had 23 points for the Marauders.
Molly Hayes scored a career-high 30 points for Augustana, which has now lost seven of its last eight road games.
Alex Feeney and
Megan Doyle each netted 18 points, and
Kristi Board added 12.
The Vikings shot 48.5 percent (32 of 66) from the field and 50 percent (19 of 38) from behind the arc.
U-Mary made trips to the charity stripe 42 times, connecting on 39 of those attempts (92.9 percent). The Vikings got to the free-throw line just 16 times.
The Marauders owned a 10-point advantage seven minutes into the contest, leading 18-8 with 13:27 to go before the break.
But a trio of Viking 3-pointers and a three-point play from Hayes tied the game at 20-20 five minutes later.
Augustana closed the first half on an 8-2 run and led 47-42 at intermission.
Hayes drilled four 3-points in the first half and had 22 points at the half.
Augustana feverishly turned its lead into a 13-point advantage to open the second half. A layup by Doyle at the 15:49 mark gave her squad a 61-48 lead.
The Marauders, though, hung around. U-Mary worked the difference down to four points three times before an easy layup by Cassandra Kelsch with 2:02 remaining made it an 82-80 contest.
The Vikings turned to Hayes on the following possession; the junior drilled a 3-pointer—her sixth of the game—to establish an 85-50 Viking lead with less than two minutes to play.
A three-point play from Collins two possessions later helped the Marauders stay in contention with 41 seconds left, and U-Mary forced a Viking shot-clock violation on the next trip down the court, giving the Marauders the ball with 10.6 seconds remaining.
Collins again came up big for U-Mary, driving the lane and pulling up from 5 feet to knot the game at 85-85 with four seconds left.
Nothing materialized for the Vikings on two subsequent in-bounding opportunities.
The Marauaders never looked back from an eight-point lead in overtime and held off the Vikings with six free throws down the stretch.
The Vikings were playing in their first overtime game of the season.
The 30-point effort from Hayes was the first 30-point game by a Viking since the 2008-09 season when Doyle did it against Chadron State to open the season.
Augustana opens a three-game homestand next Saturday, hosting Wayne State at 4 p.m.
