Vikings back on track with win over MSU Moorhead

Alex Feeney helped Augustana hold off Minnesota State Moorhead with two blocks in the last seconds of action for the Vikings to defeat the Dragons 69-63 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference basketball in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Augustana snaps a three-game losing streak with the win and improves to 14-11 (11-10 NSIC). MSUM is 19-9 (12-9 NSIC).

The victory also guarantees Augustana a spot in the upcoming eight-team NSIC tournament.

Feeney had a block at 15 seconds and again with three seconds left in the game to help Augustana keep its four-point lead. After the final block she stole the rebound and was fouled, picking up two points for Augustana at the charity stripe to close the game.

Megan Doyle was one of four Vikings in double figures with 19 points. Fenney scored 13, and Molly Hayes had 12. Kristi Board rounded out Augustana's scoring effort with 11 points.

Angie Jetvig led all scorers and was the only Dragon in double digits with 25 points. She was one board shy of a double-double with nine rebounds.

Jetvig began the game hitting a jumper just more than 30 seconds into action which was followed by a seven minute Dragon scoring drought in which the Vikings picked up 19 points.

With a balanced scoring effort from the Vikings, Augustana kept its double-figure lead until MSUM cut its deficit to nine points at 2:37 when Jetvig nailed a bucket and picked up another point from the foul line.

A free throw by Doyle closed out the half with the Vikings leading 33-25. She had nine points, connecting on 5 of 6 from the field.

Jetvig lead all scorers with 11 points at intermission.

The Dragons had 13 turnovers before the break from which the Vikings picked up 13 points.

MSUM wasn't able to continue gaining on Augustana as the Vikings entered into the second half strong, putting up 13 points in less than five minutes to set the score at 45-29.

Doyle helped the Vikings to a 21-point advantage by drilling a 3-pointer at 13:42.

Augustana held a 16-point lead at 8:58, but seven points from Jetvig in a two minute time span left MSUM trailing by nine.

The Dragons then scored nine of the next 12 points to cut their deficit to 63-60 at 23 seconds.

Feeney helped hold off MSU with her pair of blocks--each occurring in the last 15 seconds.

After shooting just 35.5 percent from the field in the first half, the Vikings improved to a 50 percent shooting percentage in the second half.  Augustana finished 42.1 percent from the floor.

The Dragons were 40.7 percent from the field.

MSUM outrebounded Augustana 36-29.

Augustana plays Minnesota, Crookston at home in its last regular-season contest tomorrow at 4 p.m.
