Vikings sweep Sioux Falls

- Augustana swept the University of Sioux Falls with an 8-0 win in six innings in Game 1 and had a 6-2 victory over the Cougars in Game 2 on Thursday afternoon in Sioux Falls, S.D. 

The Vikings improve to 19-4. USF drops to 2-6.

Ashley Meyer had the win in Game 1 and improves to 9-1. She struck out nine batters to tie her season high.  Meyer allowed just two hits.

Traci Fransen led the team with two RBIs and three hits. Jenny Brown and Theresa McMahon each added two hits.

Augustana scored three runs in both the first and third innings.

In the fourth inning Chelsey Durland sacrificed flied to score Fransen and give the Vikings a 7-0 lead.

Lindsey Spanton crossed home for the Vikings off a double by Taylor Kapsh to give Augustana its eighth run in the sixth inning.

Mickey Anderson pitched 5.0 innings for the Vikings in Game 2 and allowed just one hit and collected seven strikeouts. She improves to 5-1 on the season.

Spanton had three RBIs to lead Augustana.

Chelsi Winskowski and McMahon each had two hits.

Jenna Turner hit a home run in the first inning to give the Cougars an early advantage.

Augustana followed it up with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning.

McMahon slammed a home run in the third inning to score Winskowski and take a 3-1 lead.

Naomi Tesar found home for USF in the top of the fourth.

Spanton pinched hit and smashed a home run with Kelsey Kalkman on second and Durland on first to give Augustana its sixth run.

The Vikings open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference softball on Saturday against Northern State (doubleheader 1 p.m.).
