MANKATO, Minn. - No. 17 Augustana rolled to a conference sweep of No. 6 Minnesota State Wednesday afternoon, winning 7-2 in Game 1 and 12-6 in Game 2.
Augustana improves to 29-5 (10-1 NSIC). MSU drops to 31-8 (8-4 NSIC).
The Vikings opened up Game 1 with a four run first inning to take control. Hits from
Traci Fransen and
Chelsey Durland scored the Viking runs.
Durland was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the third to bring Augustana ahead 5-0.
MSU had three hits and scored two runs in the bottom of the third.
Lindsay Spanton singled in the seventh inning to score
Jenny Brown and
Kelsey Kalkman grounded out, scoring
Elizabeth Murray, Augustana's seventh run.
Ashley Meyer pitched all 7.0 innings for the Vikings, improving her record to 15-2. She had 10 strikeouts and allowed seven hits.
Fransen had two RBIs and two hits, while Durland added three RBIs and one hit in the afternoon.
In Game 2 of the doubleheader, the Vikings got off to another lead in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Spanton singled to score two runs. Kalman then grounded out to score the Vikings' third run of the inning.
The Mavericks added a run in the bottom of the inning.
In the second inning,
Brittany Coufal found home plate off a fielding error from MSU. Spanton then singled to score Brown, bringing Augustana's lead to 5-1.
Theresa McMahon had a hit in the third inning, scoring
Chelsi Winskowski.
Spanton, Franson, and Winskowski added RBIs for Augustana in the fourth inning for the Vikings to lead 10-1.
Two runs were scored by MSU in the fourth inning.
Hits from Kalkman and Spanton in the fifth inning brought Augustana's runs to 12.
With Chelsea Erickson on first, Kelli Wood homerd for MSU in the bottom of the fifth.
Durland earned the win for the Vikings, pitching all 7.0 innings. She allowed six hits and had three strikeouts to improve her record to 9-2.
Spanton and Kalkman each had three RBIs and two hits. McMahon also had two hits, while Winskowski had two RBIs.
The Vikings return home on Saturday for a doubleheader against St. Cloud State at noon. On Sunday the Vikings will host Concordia at 1 p.m.
