SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - No. 20 Augustana opened Nothern Sun Intercollegiate Conference softball with a sweep of Northern State on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings downed the Wolves 10-1 in five innings in Game 1 and won Game 2, 9-5.
The Vikings improve to 21-4 (2-0 NSIC). NSU drops to 6-14 (0-2 NSIC).
Ashley Meyer (10-1) allowed just two hits and had five strikeouts while pitching all 5.0 innings in Game 1.
Six Vikings recorded a team high two hits, but
Jenny Brown and
Brittany Coufal led the team in RBIs with two each.
Augustana had two cross home plate in the first inning and the Vikings scored its third run in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead.
The Vikings then put together an impressive third inning, scoring four runs.
Lindsay Spanton earned the first run of the inning off a ground out by
Brittany Coufal.
Kelsey Kalkman then reach home with a single by
Taylor Kapsch.
Theresa McMahon smashed a homerun to score Kapsch and give the Vikings a 7-0 advantage.
NSU scored its lone run in the top of the fourth.
Augustana had a three run inning in the bottom of the fourth. Kalkman's single to score
Traci Fransen was followed with a triple by Chelsea Durland to score Kalkman. A sacrifice fly from Coufal scored Durland to bring in the Vikings' 10th run.
Mickey Anderson pitched 3.0 innings in Game 2 for the Vikings to record the win. She allowed three hits and two runs. Also pitching for the Vikings in the game were
Chelsey Durland and
Ashley Meyer.
Kalkman tallied three RBIs off a homerun to lead the Vikings. With two RBIs each was
Elizabeth Murray and Fransen.
The Vikings started the game strong, scoring four runs in the first inning and adding another five in the second inning to lead 9-0.
In the top of the third, NSU had its chance to make a comeback with the bases loaded, but the Wolves scored just one run in the inning.
The Wolves hit a home run to begin the fourth inning. NSU added another three runs in the inning.
Neither team found home plate in the remaining innings.
The Vikings host U-Mary Sunday at noon.
