FAYETTE, Iowa - Home runs from
Taylor Kapsch,
Lindsay Spanton and
Brittany Coufal led to a 10-1 victory for No. 10 Augustana over Upper Iowa in Game 1 of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Vikings then earned a 3-1 victory over the Peacocks in Game 2.
The Vikings have now won 13 straight conference games to improve to 39-5 (20-1 NSIC) on the season. UIU drops to 6-37 (2-18 NSIC).
Kapsch hit a homer in the second inning that scored Lindsay Coufal to give the Vikings an early 2-0 lead in Game 1. It was her fourth home run this year.
UIU scored its lone run in the bottom of the second off an Augustana error.
Spanton slugged her eighth homer of the season in the top of the third to score the Vikings' only run of the inning.
The Vikings earned another four runs in the fifth off a double from
Traci Fransen and a single by
Brittany Coufal.
Chelsey Durland reached home on a passed ball.
Spanton led off batting in the seventh and smashed a double, which was followed by a double from
Kelsey Kalkman to score Spanton. Coufal gave Augustana its ninth and 10th runs by drilling homer.
Ashley Meyer earned her 19th win in the circle for the Vikings, allowing no earned runs and five hits. She struck out nine batters.
Coufal's three hits and three RBI's led the team.
In Game 2, Upper Iowa broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth when Hannah Jones hit a home run.
Theresa McMahon belted her 10th homer this season to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. She is now tied with
Traci Fransen and
Kelsey Kalkman to lead Augustana in home runs.
A sacrifice fly from Spanton in the top of the sixth brought
Elizabeth Murray home and scored Augustana's final run.
McMahon had two RBI's and three hits in the game.
Chelsey Durland is now 17-2 on the season having pitched all 7.0 innings. She gave up three hits and had five strikeouts.
The Vikings conclude conference action Thursday and Saturday on the road. Thursday's doubleheader is against No. 12 Winona State and will begin at 1 p.m. Augustana will then play a doubleheader against Wayne State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
