SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - No. 1-seeded Augustana picked up two wins on Day 2 of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament, first defeating No. 4-seeded Minnesota State 5-0 before blanking No. 2-seeded Wayne State 2-0 on Friday in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The Vikings (44-2) used home runs from
Lindsay Spanton and
Theresa McMahon to propel them to the victory over WSC.
Ashley Meyer is now 23-3 after pitching both games for Augustana. She allowed just three hits against WSC and six hits against MSU. She struck out 13 in the afternoon. Meyer has 10 complete shutouts on the season.
Spanton was the lead-off batter in the second inning against the Wildcats when she slammed her ninth homer of the season.
McMahon then belted a homer to left field to begin the bottom of the third. She leads the team with 15 home runs.
Kelsey Kalkman had two hits in the game, while
Elizabeth Murray and
Brittany Coufal each added one hit.
In Augustana's game against the Mavericks, home runs from Kalkman and
Taylor Kapsch advanced the Vikings to a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
In the fifth inning, Murray and
Traci Fransen got the bats rolling again for Augustana with a single and a double, respectively. Spanton then singled to score the final two runs of the game.
McMahon, Murray, Fransen, Spanton, Kalkman,
Brittany Coufal and Kapsch each had one hit in the game.
No. 8-ranked Augustana continues play in the NSIC Tournament on Saturday. The Vikings, who are the touranment's top seed, will face the winner of a contest between No. 13 Minnesota State and Wayne State in the finals at noon at Bowden Field.
