SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana was selected eighth by the
Sporting News in its 2011-12 Division II preseason top-10 poll. Viking guards
Cody Schilling (second team) and
Cameron McCaffrey (honorable mention) were also named preseason All-America by the publication
Sporting News picked Bellarmine (Ky.) as the preseason favorite.
Augustana finished the 2010-11 season 18-9 overall and 15-7 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Vikings were third in the final conference standings.
Schilling, a senior-to-be, started all 27 games last season and was named All-NSIC first team, Daktronics All-Central Region first team and NABC All-Central District first team. The Ellsworth, Minn., native averaged a team-best 21.2 points and 2.9 assists per game and led the NSIC in scoring at 22.6 points per contest. He also shot 52.4 percent from floor and 38.1 percent from behind arc and was an 88.2-percent free-throw shooter.
A junior from Portland, Ore., McCaffrey also started all 27 games a year ago and earned spots on the All-NSIC first team, Daktronics All-Central Region second team and NABC All-Central District second team. He was second on the team in scoring with 19.0 points per game. McCaffrey also shot 43.2 percent from field and recorded 27 steals .
Augustana will play the University of Minnesota on Nov. 7 in an exhibition game before opening the regular-season against the University of Sioux Falls on Nov. 15 at the Sioux Falls Arena.
