FAYETTE, Iowa - Upper Iowa had three players in double-digit kills to defeat Augustana 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-13) in the Vikings' first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match of the season Friday evening in Fayette, Iowa.
The Peacocks improve to 7-4 (1-1 NSIC). Augustana drops to 6-3 (0-1 NSIC).
Brooke Lewko led the Vikings with eight kills on 22 attempts, totaling a hitting percentage of .227.
Kayla Wallerich had 27 assists and
Christine Bielski added 13 digs.
Augustana played its best of the evening in the opening set, recording 13 kills and a .235 hitting percentage. The Vikings tied the score at 9-9 and continued to fight point for point with the Peacocks until they had a pair of kills to take the set 26-24.
The Vikings continued to battle until the very end in the second set despite errors plaguing the way. With the Peacocks ahead 24-22, Lewko and
Jordan Spatenka each had a kill to bring Augustana behind by one. However, UIU finished the Vikings off 25-23 and held Augustana to a .048 hitting percentage.
UIU's offense was very strong in the final set, hitting .542. The Peacocks jumped out to an early lead to win the set 25-13.
Augustana travels to Winona, Minn., Saturday for a 4 p.m. match against Winona State.
