U-Mary hands Vikings third straight loss

BOX SCORE BOX SCORE

BISMARCK, N.D. - U-Mary held Augustana scoreless for the first time since 2007 and saddled the Vikings with a 10-0 loss Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference football in Bismarck, N.D.

U-Mary improves to 2-1 (1-1 NSIC), while Augustana drops its third straight game and sits at 0-3 (0-2 NSIC).

The shutout loss for the Vikings is the first since Sept. 29, 2007, when North Dakota beat Augustana 37-0 in Grand Forks.

The last time Augustana started the season 0-3 was 1991. The Vikings went 0-10 that year.

Craig Bagnell completed 15 of 28 passes for 283 yards and one touchdown for the Marauders. Four had at least 40 yards receiving, led by Bryan Sandy's 65 yards.

Augustana's Sam Holsen surpassed 100 yards receiving for the fifth time in his career, snagging eight balls for 152 yards. Josh Hanson threw for 195 yards on 15 completions.

The Vikings punted seven times in the loss and missed on three field-goal chances.

U-Mary capitalized on drives in the second and fourth quarters.

It was a flurry of unproductive possessions—for both teams—in the first half. Augustana totaled 161 yards of total offense, while U-Mary had 124. The Marauders, however, managed to turn one of their drives into the half's only score.

Augustana's seven drives in the first half resulted in four punts and three missed field goals by Drew Behrens.

U-Mary punted on four of its drives, was intercepted on another and went 80 yards to go ahead 7-0 deep into the second quarter.

The Marauders' scoring drive wrapped up at 3:55 after Bagnell found Tyler Steffan from 24 yards out, capping a five-play, 80-yard surge. Within that drive, U-Mary registered three of its five first-half first downs.

U-Mary had a chance to lengthen its lead to 10-0 on its first possession of the second half, but Tyler Ryan's 34-yard field-goal attempt hit the upright. The Vikings punted on their resulting drive.

The Marauders again set up for a 34-yard field goal on their subsequent possession just inside the fourth quarter, but Ryan's attempt drifted right.

Two possessions later, though, the Marauders would make it two-possession game after Ryan nailed a 23-yard field goal to make it 10-0 contest with 1:51 left. The U-Mary effort was kept alive by a roughing-the-passer penalty that neutralized a Nick Andreas interception.

U-Mary's Marcus Broome, who finished with 10 tackles, picked off Hanson on the Vikings' next drive, allowing the Marauders to wind down the final 1:18 of the game.

The Augustana defense mostly kept the Marauders in check, allowing just four third-down conversions and holding an offense that entered the game averaging more than 500 yards per contest to less than 360. U-Mary was also averaging 38.0 points per contest heading into Saturday's tilt.

Austin Luecke led the Viking defense, finishing with a game-high 14 tackles. Zac Kallas notched a career-high seven tackles and an interception.

Augustana travels to Southwest Minnesota State next Saturday for an NSIC South Division game. Kickoff from Marshall, Minn., is at 6 p.m.
