Vikings defeat Northern State in double overtime

ABERDEEN, S.D.
- Mackenzie Trom's goal at 102:30 in double overtime lifted Augustana to a 2-1 victory over Northern State Saturday afternoon. The game marked the first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contest for the two teams.

Augustana has now won three-straight games and improves to 3-2 (1-0 NSIC). NSU drops to 3-3 (0-1 NSIC).

This was the first overtime win for Augustana since the Vikings' 4-3 double-overtime win against St. Cloud State on Sept. 11, 2009. Augustana had been winless in 13-straight overtime contests.

Trom continues to lead the team with three goals this season.

Stacy Dally found the back of the net first for the Vikings, scoring her first goal of the season at 61:00. Trom passed the ball through NSU's defense to Dally who kicked it under the Wolves' goalkeeper.

NSU's Renee Gittings found the back of the net in the 84th minute of action to tie the game. Liz Royce fired a corner kick to Gittings who was able to tap the ball past Amanda Wagner.

Aleisha Oehlerking and Kate Timmons each had shots during the first overtime but NSU's Shaina Stein made the saves. Stein finished the game making a total of 10 stops for NSU.

Augustana kept attacking in the second overtime as Jessie Huff opened action with a shot on goal, but was unable to get it past the keeper.

In the 103rd minute of play, Trom had a free kick from 19 yards out to give Augustana the win.

Wagner made six stops in the game for the Vikings.

The Vikings outshot the Wolves 20-13 with Maren Werth leading Augustana with seven shots, two were on goal.

Augustana looks to continue its winning ways on Sunday when it takes to the pitch against U-Mary at 1 p.m.
