SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Cody Schilling scored 15 points to help Augustana to a 63-49 victory over Wayne State Saturday evening in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball in Sioux Falls.
Augustana moves to 10-5 (7-4 NSIC), while WSC falls to 4-11 (3-8 NSIC).
Schilling added six rebounds, as did
Leif Nomeland and
David Fritsch.
Cameron McCaffrey finished with 12 points.
Amry Shelby's game-high 16 points led the Wildcats.
Augustana shot 43.5 percent in the relatively low-scoring affair. The Vikings warmed to 53.8 percent in the second half after shooting 30 percent in the first 20 minutes.
From the free-throw line, Augustana shot a season-best 87 percent (20 of 23).
WSC finished shooting 39.2 percent from the floor.
Neither team could seem to gets its offense going in the first 20 minutes of the contest. Augustana shot just 30 percent in the first half, while WSC was relatively accurate at 42.3 percent but could only muster 25 first-half points.
The Vikings received half of their 26 points in the first half at the free-throw line, connecting on 13 of 14 from the stripe.
Augustana's largest lead of the first half came at the 7:47 mark when the Vikings held a 17-11 advantage.
WSC trimmed the difference to 26-25 by intermission.
Shelby led the Wildcats with 12 first-half points;
Drae Murray and
Eric Jorgensen each had seven points for the Vikings.
The Vikings never trailed in the second half, though the WSC managed to tie the game at 37 with 12:48. Augustana answered with a 7-0 run--getting free throws from Murray, a bucket from McCaffrey and a 3-pointer by
Yuriy Malashenko--to lead 44-37 with 10 minutes to play.
Six minutes later, the Vikings had extended their lead to 16 points at 59-43.
Augustana's largest lead came with 1:31 left after Schilling hit a layup for a 63-45 (18 points) Viking advantage.
The Vikings outrebounded the Wildcats 34-30 and turned WSC's 17 turnovers into 23 points.
Schilling's 15 points allowed him to pass current Augustana Director of Athletics Bill Gross on the all-time scoring list. He now has 1,637 career points and sits at seventh all time.
Augustana travels to Upper Iowa and Winona State on Friday and next Saturday for a pair of NSIC contests.
