Vikings open new year with win at St. Cloud State

BOX SCORE

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Eighteen points and nine rebounds from Alex Feeney lifted Augustana to a 77-60 win over St. Cloud State Monday evening in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball in St. Cloud, Minn.

Augustana, which picked up its 10th straight win against the Huskies, moves to 8-3 (5-2 NSIC).  SCSU falls to 5-5 (2-4 NSIC).

Feeney's 18 points came on 6 of 13 shooting from the floor; she also connected on a pair of 3-pointers.  Faith Tinklenberg finished with 15 points, and Emily Schulte added 12.

Jessica Benson's game-high 19 points paced the Huskies.

Augustana shot 50.0 percent (25 of 50), marking the second consecutive game the Vikings have hit at least half their shots from the field.  That performance also included a 10-of-22 (45.5 percent) outing from behind the arc.

The Huskies opened the contest on a 10-3 run, but outside shooting by the Vikings quickly quieted the SCSU surge.  Augustana scored 12 unanswered points with just less than 14 minutes to go before halftime.  Three consecutive 3-pointers by Schulte, Cami Koehn and Tinklenberg keyed the explosion, and the Vikings led 24-12 at the 10:51 mark.

The Vikings earned their largest lead of the first half 30 seconds later after Schulte nailed another 3-pointer for a 27-14 Augustana advantage.

SCSU trimmed the difference to five points at 37-32 with 3:31 remaining before intermission when Carley Jeffery connected on a 3-pointer, but Augustana owned a 45-36 lead at halftime behind Feeney's 11 points.

The Vikings shot 53.3 percent (16 of 30) in the opening half and nailed six 3-pointers.

Augustana extended its lead to 19 two different times during the second half, but the Huskies mounted a spirited run with 8:05 left.  It was a 9-2 spurt that put SCSU within five points at 63-58 with 5:15 to go.

Timely shooting from behind the arc, though, kept the Huskies away.  Feeney and Tinklenberg combined for a trio of 3-pointers in the final 3:30 of play to return and sustain a double-figure Augustana lead.

Augustana forced 20 Husky turnovers and turned those mistakes into 33 points.  The Vikings, however, committed a season-high 23 turnovers in the win.

Andrea Whitney made three blocks for Augustana, which finished with six total stuffs.

The Vikings finish this two-game road swing at Concordia University, St. Paul tomorrow at 6 p.m.
