Shaunteva Ashley made a layup with three seconds left, breaking Augustana away from a 55-55 tie, to lift the Vikings to a 57-55 victory over Winona State Saturday evening in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball in Winona, Minn.
Augustana improves to 14-3 (11-2 NSIC) with its eighth-straight win. WSU is 11-8 (5-7 NSIC).
WSU hit a midcourt shot just after time expired to miss its opportunity for a comeback win.
Ashley finished the game with seven points and led the Vikings in assists with three.
Molly Hayes and
Lydia Nelson both reached double-digit scoring for Augustana with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Marieanna Dulas scored a game-high 18 points for the Warriors.
Augustana scored the game's first five points, and despite WSU knotting the score three times, the Vikings grew their advantage to 17-10 at 10:04 after
Emily Schulte dropped in a layup.
WSU answered with a 9-2 run over the next four minutes to tie the score at 19.
Although Nelson quickly made a layup to put the lead back in the Vikings' hands, it wouldn't last with WSU making a free throw followed by a layup to steal the advantage from Augustana for the first time with 5:21 remaining in the half.
The lead bounced back-and-forth between the two teams before a Warrior bucket gave WSU a 30-29 advantage at the buzzer.
Augustana opened the second half with a 10-1 run that built a 39-31 Viking lead with 16:34 remaining in the game.
With 10:19 on the clock, Augustana held a 48-41 advantage, but WSU cut the lead and tied the score 48-48 with 7 minutes, 20 seconds remaining.
WSU then used a 7-2 run to hold a 55-50 lead at the 2:32 mark.
The Vikings held WSU scoreless in the final minutes and Augustana dumped in seven points-including Ashley's layup- for the win. Hayes recored the other five points in the Vikings' game-winning run.
The Vikings shot 40.7 percent from the field and held WSU to 36.5 percent shooting.
Augustana returns home next weekend to host Concordia University, St. Paul and St. Cloud State.
