No. 21 Augustana wins overtime thriller over Bemidji State

BOX SCORE

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - After a Cody Schilling 3-pointer forced overtime, No. 21 Augustana grinded out a 103-93 double-overtime victory over Bemidji State Saturday evening in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball in Sioux Falls.

Augustana, which broke out of a three-game losing skid with the win, moves to 9-4 (6-3 NSIC).  BSU falls to 10-4 (5-3 NSIC).

Schilling drained a 3-pointer as time expired in regulation to knot the contest at 79-79.  The two teams each scored six points in the first overtime period, and Augustana outscored BSU 18-8 in the second overtime session to secure the victory.

Schilling finished with a season-high 29 points.  He was joined in double figures by Cameron McCaffrey (19), Drae Murray (19) and Yuriy Malashenko (13).

Malashenko also added eight boards.

BSU got a game-high 34 points from James Ellisor, who went 11 of 20 from the field.

Augustana shot 49.3 percent in the win and connected on eight 3-pointers.

The Beavers outrebounded the Vikings 48-32.  Each team held double-figure leads in the game prior to overtime--BSU in the first half and Augustana in the second half.

The Vikings trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half and faced a double-figure deficit as late as the 6:43 mark.

But Augustana unleashed a 17-5 run from there to close the half.  Schilling scored nine points in the resurgence.

It was enough to get the Vikings an intermission lead as they led 36-33 at the break.

Schilling had 15 first-half points.

Augustana managed to take a 10-point lead at 51-41 six minutes into the second half.  But hot shooting by BSU allowed the Beavers to creep back.  With 8:45 left in regulation, BSU took its first lead of the second half after Dermaine Crockell hit a 3-pointer to put his team ahead 59-56.  The Beaver lead was at six points with 4:14 to go.

With eight seconds remaining in regulation, Lance Rongstad hit a pair of free throws for the Beavers to put them ahead 79-76.  The Vikings proceeded to go the length of the floor where Malashenko found Schilling just to the left of the top of the key for the game-tying 3-pointer as time expired.

In the first overtime period, the two teams stayed knotted at 85-85 the entire final minute of play.

But the second overtime term belonged to Augustana.  McCaffrey scored nine of the Vikings' 18 points, and Augustana forced two BSU turnovers to put the finishing touches on the win.

Augustana tied a season-low with just six turnovers.

Both squads were given ample chances at the charity stripe.  BSU finished 25 of 28 from the free-throw line, while Augustana went 25 of 34.

The Vikings' 103 points marked a season high.  It was also the most points Augustana has scored since it notched 103 against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on Dec. 17, 2009.

Augustana hosts Minnesota Duluth tomorrow at 4 p.m.
