Vikings shut out rival Cougars 2-0

BOX SCORE SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana shut out cross-town rival University of Sioux Falls 2-0 for the second time this season.  The Vikings finish the 2012 season with consecutive wins for a 6-10-2 record, 5-8-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play and the Cougars drop to 0-17-1, including 0-14-1 in NSIC competition.

Augustana earned the second half of a point toward the Mayor's Cup with this victory after earning the first half in the season-opening win over Sioux Falls.

Kirsten Smith scored her first career goal and it proved to be the game winner for the Vikings after 75 minutes of defensive heavy soccer.

The Vikings held an 8-2 margin on shots in the first half, but couldn't find the back of the net.  Augustana equaled the Cougars, 2-2, for shots on goal.  Smith and Kara Bartels were active up front with two and three shots in the first half, respectively.

The Vikings and Cougars fought for 30 more minutes, before Smith broke the scoreless tie.  Bartels served a long ball which found Smith and she finished it with a looping shot just inside the 18-yard box past the keeper.  Bartels' pass earned her a second assist for the 2012 season.

The Vikings stayed in control then put the nail in the coffin when Haley Berner found Maren Werth at the top of the 18-yard box and Werth drilled a shot to the lower left corner of the goal to go ahead 2-0.  Werth's recent move to midfield/forward finally paid off with her first goal of the season in the 90th minute of the last game.  Berner collected her second assist of the season as well.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Limmer came up big with three saves including a diving effort as the Cougars tried to tie the score.  Limmer's record moves to 2-6 with her goals against average falling to 0.85.

Augustana finishes the season at 6-10-2, with a 5-8-2 record in NSIC action.
