Vikings out-muscle South Dakota Mines on Friday night

BOX SCORE SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana crashed the boards grabbing 48 rebounds and hit 10 3-pointers in an 85-65 win over South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (1-1) on Friday night in Sioux Falls. Cameron McCaffrey just missed his first career double-double finishing with 14 points and dishing out nine assists for Augustana (3-0). McCaffrey also grabbed five rebounds.

Augustana grabbed 18 offensive boards, led by Alex Richter who finished with four rebounds on the offensive side of the court.

Daniel Jansen finished with 12 points for the second straight game, third straight in double figures, and led Augustana on the glass grabbing seven rebounds. Richter added 10 points and six rebounds for the Vikings. Augustana 48 percent from the field on 32 of 66 shooting but was just 11 of 21 from the free throw line in the game. Augustana had 13 players score in the game, with eight dropping five or more points on the night. 

Philip Schanilec led South Dakota Mines with 16 points on 5 of 12 shooting while Caleb Shockman finished with 15. 

Augustana jumped all over South Dakota Mines early in the game hitting 7 of 12 3-pointers in the first half. The Vikings took a 52-35 lead into halftime and led by as many as 26 points during the half.

Augustana started off fast getting 3-pointers by McCaffrey and Jamall Taylor on consecutive possessions to take an 8-2 lead just under three minutes in. The Vikings spread the ball around in the first half with 11 players getting in on the scoring mix.

Augustana continued to pressure the Hardrockers as the half went on and the Vikings were able to push its lead to 26 points after back-to-back 3-pointers by Casey Schilling and Yuriy Malashenko

Augustana shot 59 percent from the field in the first half on 19 of 32 shooting. South Dakota Mines was 11 of 28 (39 percent) from the field, including 4 of 11 from 3-point range.

The Vikings came out in the second half picking up where it left off in the first when Taylor, who finished the game with nine points, drilled a 3-pointer to give Augustana an 18-point lead at 55-37.

The Hardrockers chipped away at Augustana's lead before Joe Burt drilled a 3-pointer with 15:55 left in the game pushing the Vikings' lead to 59-42. Burt finished with eight points, drilling two 3-pointers in the game.

Augustana was able push its lead all the way back to 24 with 5:50 left in the game on a pull-up jumper by McCaffrey making the score 79-55.

The Vikings finished the game with 36 points in the paint, including 15 second-chance points. Augustana's bench played bit tonight scoring 36 points. 

Augustana hosts Dakota State on Monday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Elmen Center.
