LAS VEGAS - No. 8 Augustana opened its season with a 4-1 win over Western New Mexico and then fell to Sonoma State 7-2 at the Desert Stinger on Friday evening. On Saturday, the team defeated Metro State 8-5, Regis 9-0 and Grand Canyon 8-2.
In the first game,
Kelsey Kalkman went 2 for 3 at the plate, including two RBIs, while Janelle Trautmann hit a home run in her debut with the Vikings.
Trautmann also notched the win in the circle, tossing 4.0 innings.
Chelsey Durland closed the final three innings and earned the save.
Against Sonoma State,
Lindsay Spanton slapped a double, while Kalkman and
Brittany Coufal scored the Vikings' two runs.
NSIC Preseason Pitcher of the Year
Ashley Meyer started the game for the Vikings but gave up four runs in 3.2 innings pitched. Durland worked the final 2.0 innings and gave up three additional runs.
Offensively against Metro State, Spanton and
Chelsi Winskowski each hit solo home runs and scored twice, while
Jenny Brown added another two runs and Durland another on a solo shot. Kalkman had two RBI's for the Vikings.
Trautmann started the game for the Vikings but gave up five earned runs in 2.0 innings thrown. Durland threw the final 5.0 to earn the victory.
The Vikings had impressive performances from the plate and in the field against Regis as they shut them out for a five-inning victory.
Kalkman continued her offensive showcase against Regis, as she went 2 for 3 with four RBIs, including one home run.
Elizabeth Murray also broke out from the batter's box, going 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.
Trautmann and
Matley Jones combined to shut out Regis from the pitcher's circle. Trautmann threw 4.0 shutout innings with four strikeouts to earn the win, and Jones finished the fifth, striking out two of the four batters she faced. Neither pitcher gave up a walk in the game.
In their Desert Stinger finale, Murray once again found success in the batter's box, scoring three runs while going 1 for 2 with a home run and two walks. Spanton and Trautmann executed from the three and four spots in the lineup, as Spanton went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a walk, while Trautmann was 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and three RBI's.
Meyer closed out the tournament with a victory, giving up just two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings pitched. Durland finished the game, throwing 1.0 innings and allowing only one hit.
The Vikings are off until Feb. 25 and 26 when they travel to St. Cloud, Minn., for the Husky Dome Classic.
