ST. CLOUD, Minn. - No. 7 Augustana swept its first day at the Husky Dome Classic, defeating St. Cloud State 7-2 and Lewis 3-2.
Augustana improves to 6-1.
Against SCSU, Augustana's
Chelsi Winskowski scored the first run of the game in the third inning after being hit by a pitch and getting drove in by a
Taylor Kapsch double.
SCSU then tied the game with a walk, wild pitch and single against Augustana starter Janelle Trautmann, who threw 5.0 innings with two strikeouts and gave up only two earned runs.
After giving up another two runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Vikings tied the game again with a single by Winskowski and a home run by
Matley Jones.
Theresa McMahon led off the seventh with a single then advanced to second before pinch-runner
Elissa Reinsma replaced her.
Kelsey Kalkman had another single, moving Reinsma to third. Winskowski stepped into the batter's box and delivered with a double, scoring two on her second hit of the game. Jones then finished off the offensive flurry with her second home run of the game, scoring Winskowski and herself to make the score 7-3.
The Vikings were led offensively by Winskowski's three runs and two RBIs, Jones' two home runs and Kapsch's RBI double.
Chelsey Durland picked up the win after throwing the sixth and seventh innings, striking out three and giving up only two runs.
The second game of the afternoon featured a solid offensive performance by
Lindsay Spanton, who had a double and home run.
Jenny Brown slapped a single in the third inning and reached on a fielder's choice in the fifth--when Spanton hit her home run to put the Vikings up 2-0.
When Spanton reached base in the seventh, Kapsch was subsituted, then stole second base and scored on
Kelsey Kalkman's single.
Ashley Meyer pitched 7.0 innings and picked up the win, giving up on two earned runs on nine hits and striking out three.
Augustana will finish the weekend Sunday when the Vikings face Upper Iowa at noon and Valley City State at 2 p.m.
