SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - No. 23 Augustana swept Southwest Minnesota State in the Vikings' home opener on Wednesday, 3-2 and 5-3.
Game 1 ended when
Theresa McMahon belted a walk-off, solo home run in the eighth inning, while
Chelsey Durland held off two late inning threats by SMSU to earn the save in Game 2.
Chelsey Durland (3-0) picked up the win in Game 1 after
Ashley Meyer left with the score tied 2-2. Meyer threw 6.0 innings with six stikeouts and gave up only one earned run. Durland had three strikeouts in 2.0 innings thrown.
McMahon led off the game with a single into left field before scoring on
Jenelle Trautmann's RBI single.
Durland scored the Vikings second run of the game in the second inning after reaching on a single, moving to second on a wild pitch and third on
Brittany Coufal's ground ball. Durland crossed the plate as Chelsi WInskowski slapped a hit into left field.
McMahon's home run came in the bottom of the eighth when she hammered a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence.
Trautmann (11-2) started Game 2 for the Vikings and threw 5.0 shutout innings. Durland earned the save (3) after throwing the final 2.0 innings, giving up three runs with two strikeouts.
McMahon started the Vikings off in the first inning with a lead-off walk. She was followed by
Jenny Brown, who reached on an error by SMSU's Kaley Scearcy, allowing McMahon to move to second.
Both runners moved up a base on
Elizabeth Murray's sacrifice bunt before scoring after Spanton drove a deep fly ball into left field which was dropped by SMSU's Kris Penick.
Murray contributed her own run in the third inning with a solo home run over the right-center fence
The Vikings' final two runs came in the sixth inning after Spanton led off with a double. Kempf, who replaced Spanton as a pinch runner, scored on a single by
Kelsey Kalkman.
Wiskowski hit the second double of the inning after Reinsma (who replaced Kalkman) was caught stealing. Winskowski then scored after stealing a base and reaching home on
Matley Jones' RBI single.
After giving up three runs in the final two innings, the Vikings ended the game on a throw from Winskowski to Murray to tag Penick out at the plate.
Augustana continues its home stand tomorrow with a doubleheader against the University of Sioux Falls at 3 p.m.
