SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -
Ashley Meyer (12-2) tossed the first no-hitter of her career to lead No. 23 Augustana to a 2-0 victory over cross-town rival the University of Sioux Falls on Thursday afternoon at Bowden Field before the VIkings offense awoke in a 9-1 victory after five innings in Game 2.
In Game 1, Augustana and USF battled back and forth through five innings before
Kelsey Kalkman led off the bottom of the fifth with a double.
Erin Kempf then replaced Kalkman and was thrown out at the plate on
Brittany Coufal's ground ball to shortstop. Coufal moved to third when Winskowski drove a ground ball into right field.
Theresa McMahon continued her hot-hitting with a line drive to right that scored Coufal and Winskowski.
Meyer struck out 12 USF batters in the game and allowed only two baserunners, both of whom reached on errors.
In Game 2, McMahon led off with a home run over the right-center fence.
Jenelle Trautmann then reached on a single up the middle and crossed the plate after Kalkman's single.
Trautmann (12-2) started the game for the Vikings and threw 5.0 innings and gave up only one run to earn the victory.
In the bottom of the second,
Taylor Kapsch reached with a line-drive single and scored on McMahon's double down the right field line. McMahon came around to score on
Elizabeth Murray's sacrifice fly.
In the fourth inning, USF's Bailey Bouman scored the Cougars lone run of the doubleheader when Jenna Turner hit a RBI double. Patricia Quintana and Turner were each thrown out at home plate during the inning.
Matley Jones started a flurry of three straight hits in the sixth that included three doubles and three runs. Jones was replaced by Kempf on the base paths, who moved to third on Kapsch's double into left center. Kempf and Kapsch both scored on McMahon's second double of the game. Trautmann hit the Vikings third double of the inning with two outs to score McMahon, stretching the Vikings lead to 7-1.
Augustana ended the game early with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. USF's Amanda Walter's got two quick groundball outs in the inning, but failed to put the Vikings away when Jones stepped into the batter's box. Jones reached first with a single up the middle before Kapsch had her third hit of the game to move Jones to second. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch before McMahon's RBI single put Jones across home. Kapsch scored the winning run when pinch hitter
E.J. Scharmer blasted a 2-2 pitched into left field.
McMahon was 4 for 4 in Game 2 with a home run, two doubles and four RBIs. She went 6 for 7 in the doubleheader.
Kapsch was also impressive in the win with a 3 for 3 performance that included three runs and a double.
Augustana continues its home stand this weekend with two conference doubleheaders. The Vikings play Bemidji State on Saturday at noon and Minnesota Duluth on Sunday at noon.
