SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Augustana topped Bemidji State 4-1 and 9-1 (five innings) in a conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Augustana improves to 29-4 (7-1 NSIC) while BSU drops to 7-18 (0-9 NSIC).
In Game 1, Augustana and BSU battled through the first two innings before Augustana broke out of a 0-0 tie with a three-run inning. BSU scored their lone run in the top of the sixth, while Augustana pushed it to 4-1 in the bottom of the same inning.
In the third,
Theresa McMahon led off with a double up the left side before advancing to third on a passed ball.
Elizabeth Murray then drove McMahon home on a fielder's choice ground ball up the first base line. BSU's Cassie MacArthur's throw was late getting to the catcher on the play.
Jenelle Trautmann put two more runs on the board with the first swing of her at-bat as she sent the ball high over the right field fence.
In the bottom of the sixth inning,
Lindsay Spanton led off with a double into right center before being replaced by pinch-runner
Elissa Reinsma. Reinsma sprinted to second a passed ball, then crossed the plate on
Kelsey Kalkman's single that snuck past the shortstop.
Ashley Meyer improved to 13-2 for the season after throwing 5.0 innings with one hit allowed and five strikeouts. Meyer allowed only one baserunner in the contest.
Chelsey Durland earned her fourth save of the season after throwing the final 2.0 innings and giving up one run (unearned).
In Game 2, Trautmann (13-2) threw the entire 5.0 innings to earn the victory. She allowed three hits and one run in the contest, but struck out four batters.
The Vikings showed their power at the plate with three doubles and two home runs in the game.
Augustana scored three runs in the first inning after McMahon led off the game by reaching on an error. McMahon was then out at second on a fielder's choice, putting
Jenny Brown on first. During Murray's at-bat, Brown took second on a passed ball before Murray walked. Trautmann then drove a 1-0 pitch into the right field gap for a double. Brown and Murray scored on the play while Trautmann moved to third on the throw home. Trautmann later scored on Spanton's sacrifice fly to center field.
In the second inning,
Matley Jones led off with a double into right center.
Taylor Kapsch's single forced a rundown situation before Jones was thrown out at the plate. Kapsch advanced to third on the throw home. McMahon hit a two-run home run in the next at-bat to stretch the game to 5-1.
Murray led off the fifth inning with a home run and was followed by a Trautmann walk.
Erin Kempf replaced Trautmann as a pinch runner and then reached third on Spanton's double. Both Kempf and Spanton scored when
Kelsey Kalkman drove a single deep into left field. Reinsma, who replaced Kalkman on the base path, stole second base and scored the game's final run as Jones singled.
Trautmann went 3 for 5 on the day with her 10th home run of the season and two doubles.
Augustana has now won eight straight games and continues its home stand tomorrow against Minnesota Duluth in a conference doubleheader at noon.
