SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Chelsey Durland secured her seventh save of 2012 and also notched her 10th-career save to set both a single-season and career record on the day as No. 23 Augustana took two games from Minnesota Duluth Sunday afternoon. The Vikings topped the Bulldogs 8-5 in Game 1 and recorded an 8-6 victory in Game 2.
The Vikings, who have won 10-straight games, improve to 31-4 (9-1 NSIC). UMD falls to 22-16 (4-4 NSIC).
Durland, who pitched a total of five innings in the two games, broke Jenny Hill's season-record five saves set in 2000 and also reset Hill's (1998-2001) career-record nine saves. Durland had five strikeouts and allowed one run.
Augustana's offensive effort was spread out in Game 1 with eight Vikings scoring its eight runs. Ten of Augustana's 20 hits in the day were during the first game of the doubleheader.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first, scoring four unearned runs in the top of the second.
Brittany Coufal helped wake up Augustana's offense by belting a single to score
Jenelle Trautmann. The run was the first of five from the Vikings in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded,
Theresa McMahon singled to score Coufal and Durland. McMahon then stole second which allowed
Chelsi Winskowski to steal home, making the game tied at four. A single to center from
Jenny Brown drove in McMahon.
The Bulldogs made it a tie game in the fourth, but Augustana matched their run in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead.
Taylor Kapsch, who pinch ran for Durland after she walked, collected the Vikings' sixth run.
The Vikings added their final two runs in the fifth and sixth inning. Brown scored on a double from Trautmann and McMahon brought in
Matley Jones to tally her third RBI of the game.
Ashley Meyer improved to 14-2 on the season, pitching four innings and giving up six hits. She allowed just one earned run as the Vikings had five errors in the game.
Trautmann was in the circle for five innings in Game 2 for Augustana to pick up the win and move to 14-2 on the season. She gave up 10 hits and five runs.
Augustana got off to a quick start in Game 2, taking a 8-0 lead after the third inning.
During the second inning, with
Kelsey Kalkman on second and
Lindsay Spanton on third, Winskowski singled through the left side to score two RBIs. Winskowski picked up the third run of the inning on a single up the middle from Kapsch. An error by the catcher at home kept Jones safe and added another run on the scoreboard for Augustana. Kapsch scored Augustana's final run of the inning.
The Vikings continued their separation from the Bulldogs in the third, adding three runs before the Bulldogs even had one. Spanton led off the inning with a double to right field and she advanced to third after Winskowsk doubled. A passed ball allowed Spanton to score. A ground out from Kapsch advanced Winskowki home and McMahon drilled the ball down the right field line to get Jones home.
Minnesota Duluth's six runs were scored in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
McMahon, Trautmann and Spanton all had three hits on the day to lead the team.
The Bulldogs had a total of 21 hits on the day.
The Vikings are back at home on Tuesday, hosting Minnesota State for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
