CROOKSTON, Minn. - No. 21 Augustana swept Minnesota, Crookston with a 15-1 win in Game 1 and a 3-1 victory in Game 2.
Augustana improves to 40-7 (17-3 NSIC) while UMC drops to 9-28 (3-17 NSIC).
Jenelle Trautmann picked up the win in Game 1 and improves to 17-4. Trautmann had three strikeouts in 3.0 innings pitched before turning the ball over to
Chelsey Durland. Durland threw the final 2.0 innings and struck out two batters while allowing just three hits.
At the plate, Augustana was powered by five home runs, including a grand slam by Trautmann in the second inning.
Theresa McMahon finished 3 for 3 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
Lindsay Spanton added a 2 for 3 performance that included two RBIs and Trautmann finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs.
Augustana scored first after McMahon led off with a double to right center and moved to third on
Jenny Brown's ground ball out. McMahon crossed the plate when
Elizabeth Murray hit a single up the middle. After Trautmann hit into a fielder's choice and moved to second on a passed ball, Spanton hit a double that put the Vikings up 2-0.
After UMC scored one in the top of the first,
Matley Jones started a 10-run second inning with a single up the middle.
Taylor Kapsch then hit a first pitch blast over the center field fence. McMahon continued the flurry of eight straight batters reaching with her second hit of the game, a single into right field. Brown reached on an error by UMC's Kelli Burns,
Elizabeth Murray walked to load the bases. Trautmann then drove the first pitch of her at-bat towering over the left field fence for a grand slam.
Spanton followed the grand slam with the Vikings third home run of the inning to put Augustana up 8-1.
Kelsey Kalkman and Chelsi WInskowski both walked, but Jones grounded into a fielder's choice that put runners at first and third. Kapsch hit a deep fly ball that was caught in left field, but Kalkman was able to jog home. McMahon then drove her second hit of the inning past the center field fence for a two-run home run.
Brown scored the final run of the inning after reaching a single and moving around the bases after Murray reached on a error and was caught in a rundown. Augustana led 11-1 at that point.
In the fifth inning, Augustana put two more runs on the scoreboard after
Elissa Reinsma hit a single and
Brittany Coufal
hit her first home run of the season over the left center fence.
Ashley Meyer threw 7.0 innings with 11 strikeouts in Game 2 to improve to 19-3.
Trautmann was 3 for 3 and Spanton was 2 for 4, including a go-ahead single in the seventh inning proved to be the winning hit.
Offense was limited for both UMC and Augustana, as UMC scored in the first and McMahon scored in the third after being hit by a pitch and scoring after Murray hit a single.
Augustana finally pulled ahead in the top of the seventh, when Murray walked with two outs and Trautmann followed with a double, putting runners at second and third. Spanton then drove a 1-2 pitch up the middle that scored Murray and Trautmann.
Augustana is on the road tomorrow as it takes on Minnesota State Moorhead at noon.
