No. 21 Vikings sweep MSU Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. - No. 21 Augustana defeated Minnesota State Moorhead 13-0 in Game 1 and 8-1 in Game 2 on Monday.

Augustana improves to 42-7 (19-3 NSIC) while MSU Moorhead drops to 9-28 (5-19 NSIC).

Game 1's starter Jenelle Trautmann threw 5.0 shutout innings with seven strikeouts and only one hit allowed to improve to 18-4 for the season.

Offensively, Theresa McMahon, Jenny Brown, Trautmann and Chelsi Winskowski each finished 2 for 3 while Elizabeth Murray went 1 for 2 and Lindsay Spanton finished 1 for 1.  Winskowski had four RBIs while Murray added three.

McMahon led off the game with a walk before moving to second on Jenny Brown's single up the first base line.  Both batters moved up a base on a wild pitch.  McMahon scored on Murray's sacrifice fly and Brown moved to second base.  Trautmann walked next, and Spanton's single allowed Brown to score and Trautmann to reach second.  With two outs, Winskowski hit a single up the middle that pushed Trautmann across the plate and Spanton to second.  The Vikings went up 4-0 when Matley Jones hit a single into left field and Spanton scored.

In the second inning, McMahon again led off and hit a double into left field before moving to third on Brown's single.  After Brown stole second base and Murray walked to load the bases, Trautmann hit a single into left that moved each runner up a base, scoring McMahon.  After Spanton walked to scored Brown, Murray scored when Winskowski hit into a fielder's choice that forced Trautmann out at third.

Kapsch walked to start the third inning and scored when McMahon hit a double into right field.  During Brown's at-bat, McMahon went to third on a passed ball.  After Brown walked and stole second, Murray singled and brought McMahon and Brown home, pushing the Vikings lead to nine.  Kelsey Kalkman hit a fly ball to left field that was caught, but pushed Murray and Spanton, who walked, up a base.  Both Murray and Spanton scored on Winskowski's double.

Augustana's final run of the game came in the fifth inning after Trautmann doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on Spanton's single.  Trautmann scored after Kalkman hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

Ashley Meyer started Game 2 and and allowed just two hits through 5.0 innings pitched before Chelsey Durland threw the final 2.0 and allowed just one run.  Meyer improved to 20-3 for the season.

Murray went 2 for 3 in the game while McMahon added two more hits in four at-bats.

Both teams remained scoreless until the fourth when Murray hit a double and scored on Trautmann's single.

In the fifth inning, Durland reached on an error by the first baseman and stole second before putting the Vikings up 2-0 when Winskowski hit a single.  Winskowski moved to second on McMahon's single, and both runners moved up when Brown grounded out to first.  Winskowski and Brown scored when Murray drove the one out pitch into center field for a single.

The Vikings added three more runs in the sixth inning when Spanton singled up the middle to lead off.  Kalkman walked next and Durland laid down a sacrifice bunt, putting runners at first and second.  Jones then doubled with one out that put two more runs on the board.  Jones later scored when McMahon singled up the middle. 

After MSU Moorhead scored one run in the sixth, Murray walked to start the inning.  Elissa Reinsma replaced Murray as a pinch runner and tagged up to second base on a foul ball that was caught by the shortstop.  Reinsma scored later in the inning after Kalkman doubled to center field.

Augustana is home Tuesday when it faces Upper Iowa at 3 p.m. at Bowden Field.
