SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - No. 21 Augustana defeated Upper Iowa University 7-0 in Game 1 and 7-3 in Game 2 in a conference doubleheader Tuesday
Augustana improves to 44-7 (21-3 NSIC) while UIU drops to 16-33 (8-14 NSIC).
Jenelle Trautmann pitched Game 1 and improved to 19-4 after striking out five in 5.0 innings pitched.
Chelsey Durland threw the final 2.0 innings to secure the win.
Offensively,
Theresa McMahon was 2 for 3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs.
Elizabeth Murray was 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and 2 RBIs.
McMahon led off the game with a walk before moving to second on
Jenny Brown's sacrifice bunt. Murray hit a two-run blast on the first pitch of her at-bat, putting the Vikings up 2-0. Trautmann singled up the middle in the next at-bat before stealing second base. Trautmann then came around to score on
Kelsey Kalkman's single into right center.
In the third inning, Murray singled and reached third on Trautmann's double into right field.
Lindsay Spanton then hit a 2-2 pitch into center field for a sacrifice fly, scoring Murray.
Augustana pushed two more runs across in the fourth inning after
Matley Jones doubled to left field with one out and moved to third when
Taylor Kapsch hit into a fielder's choice, putting runners at first and third. Both runners scored when McMahon doubled to right center.
The final two runs of the game came in the sixth inning when McMahon hit a solo home run into left center.
Game 2's starter
Ashley Meyer improved to 21-3 after throwing 5.0 innings and turning a three-run lead over to Durland, who pitched 2.0 innings for her eleventh save of the season.
Trautmann was 3 for 4 in the game while Durland went 2 for 3.
Augustana took a four-run lead in the first inning after McMahon started the Vikings with a first-pitch home run into left center. Brown singled in the next at-bat and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Murray popped out to second base, Trautmann singled and allowed Brown to reach third. Kalkman walked with two outs to load the bases and Brown scored when Durland hit a single up the left side. Jones then singled to center and pushed Trautmann and Kalkman across the plate.
After UIU scored two in the second inning, Augustana answered with one run in the fourth inning. McMahon walked with one out and was replaced on the basepaths by Kapsch. After Kapsch moved to third on Murray's single, Kapsch scored on a wild pitch during Trautmann's at-bat.
UIU and Augustana traded runs in the fifth inning, as Spanton walked and moved around the bases before scoring on Winskowski's single into center field.
The Vikings' final score came when McMahon earned her second walk of the day and moved to second on Brown's sacrifice bunt. After Murray singled and put McMahon at third, Trautmann drove the final run home on a single up the left side.
Augustana will host Wayne State in its final regular-season doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
