ROCHESTER, Minn. – No. 2 seed Augustana defeated No. 6 seed Concordia University, St. Paul 8-0 after a walk-off grand slam by
Theresa McMahon then fell to No. 1 seeded Minnesota State 6-5 on Friday.
Augustana improves to 47-9 while CU is 30-12 and MSU improves to 46-8.
Ashley Meyer started against CU for the Vikings and threw 5.0 shutout innings with three strikeouts while allowing just four hits. McMahon and
Jenelle Trautmann fueled the Vikings offensive, as McMahon went 1 for 1 with a home run, two walks and four RBIs and Trautmann added two RBIs and a home run in a 2 for 3 performance.
Augustana jumped on the scoreboard in the first when
Elizabeth Murray singled to left field with two outs and
Jenelle Trautmann hit her third home run of the tournament to put the Vikings up 2-0.
The Vikings put together more offense in the fourth after
Kelsey Kalkman led off with a single and was pinch ran for by
Taylor Kapsch. Kapsch stole second base during
Matley Jones' at-bat, then moved to third on Jones' ground ball out. After Durland and McMahon walked to load the bases,
Jenny Brown singled through the right side to push Kapsch home.
The Vikings ended the game in the fifth with a five-run spurt, keyed by Trautmann's leadoff single up the middle. After Spanton singled and Kalkman laid down a sacrifice bunt, Jones was intentionally walked to load the bases. Durland flied out to left, but Winskowski singled to third base that scored Trautmann and extended the inning. McMahon hit a 3-2 pitch over the center field fence for a grand slam home run.
Trautmann earned the start against MSU but picked up the loss after allowing three runs on four hits in 4.0 innings pitched. Durland threw the final 2.0 innings and gave up three runs on four hits as well.
Offensively, Murray was 3 for 4 with a double and Kalkman was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Brown and McMahon were each 2 for 4.
Augustana took a 2-0 lead in the first when Brown reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third base on Murray's double into left field. Brown scored on Trautmann's single, and Spanton walked to load the bases. With two outs, Winskowski was hit by a pitch that forced Murray home.
MSU added a run in the second and two in the fourth, then pushed another batter across after back-to-back doubles in the fifth. The Mavericks' final two runs came in the sixth, forcing the Vikings into rally mode in their final at-bat.
McMahon, Brown and Murray hit three straight singles to start the seventh, and Spanton worked her third walk of the game to bring McMahon home. Kalkman singled in the next at-bat and Brown scored, leaving bases loaded with one out. After Jones walked to bring the VIkings within one (6-5), Kapsch worked an eight-pitch at-bat that ended on a called stirke.
Augustana will face No. 3 seeded Winona State tomorrow at 11 a.m.
