WOMEN'S RESULTS
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana men's and women's tennis teams opened fall competition this past Saturday at the Ashford Invitational in Waterloo, Iowa. The womens team captured six individual titles while the men picked up two individual titles.
On the women's side,
Jessa Richards defeated Ashford's Ana Mayagoitia 6-0, 6-0 in the second singles championship match. Richards defeated Saint Joes' Marie Kegley 6-2, 6-4 in her first quarterfinal match before advancing to the championship with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Danielle Hoffmann (St. Francis) in the semifinals.
Katie Jesperson fell in the championship match at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-2) to Katee Sanderson of Saint Joes.
Michelle Wadas earned a bye in the first round of No. 3 singles play and eventually won the championship match over Minnesota State's Brandy Dohmen (7-5, 6-1).
Hannah Gebauer breezed through the No. 4 singles bracket winning the championship match 6-0, 6-1.
Heather Sullivan went through the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds easily but fought hard for a 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 10-4 win over Ashford's Montserrat Elizondo to earn the No. 5 singles championship. Junior
Liz Lewis earned the No. 6 singles championship with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Emily Claeys of Saint Joes and
Jessica Spalding won the No. 8 singles title with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Theresa Stumpf of Ashford.
Jenna Helleberg lost a tight match in the championship at No. 7 singles 7-6(1), 6-3 to Alexis Haakedahl of Minnesota State.
The Augustana women swept doubles play, winning all three championships.
On the men's side, senior
Mitchell Barr won the championship at No. 1 singles picking up a 6-2, 6-4 win in his final match.
Collin Noldner breezed through No. 3 singles earning a 6-3, 6-3 win in the championship match.
Jackson Buchanan dropped the championship match at No. 4 singles falling 6-1, 6-0 in the final round.
The Augustana women's tennis team returns to action at the ITA Central Region Championships in Bolivar, Mo. on Sept. 21-23. The Ashford Invitational concludes the fall portion of the men's schedule.
