BLACK HILLS, S.D. – The Augustana volleyball team won their fourth straight match on the back of
Jordan Spatenka's 21 kills at the Black Hills State Tournament on Saturday morning. The Vikings downed Colorado Christian in four sets, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23.
The Vikings got their first lead early, at 3-2 and held on easily in the first set for a 25-18 win. A trio of early kills from
Jordan Spatenka,
Taylor Hrdlichka and
Brooke Lewko gave the Vikings a lead they would never surrender. With 16 kills, Augustana hit a .325 attack percentage in the first set.
The second set was a battle from start to finish as the Cougars edged the Vikings, 25-23, to even the match at one set apiece. The second set featured 17 tie scores and 6 lead changes with neighter team willing to budge. Colorado Christian gained a two-point lead after an Augustana attack error and a kill of their own at 23-21. Then a
Taylor Hrdlichka kill pulled them within one point but the Cougars closed the set with a kill of their own.
After a 7-7 tie in the third set, it was all Vikings as they went on to win the third set and take a 2-1 match lead with a score of 25-21. Augustana used two errors to break the tie and a flurry of kills from
Holly Hafemeyer, Spatenka, and Hrdlichka put the game out of reach and closed the third set victory.
Set four was another hard fought battle between the two teams, but four errors from the Cougars gave the Vikings the points they needed to pull out the set after a 19-19 tie.
Jordan Spatenka and
Holly Hafemeyer each had a kill to go along with the Cougar errors to finish out the set 25-23.
Offensively,
Jordan Spatenka smashed a season-high 21 kills and a .306 attack percentage.
Taylor Hrdlichka and
Holly Hafemeyer each nailed double-digit kills with 14 and 11, respectively.
Freshman setter
Marissa Johnson dished out a season and career-high 51 assists.
Grace Sanders led the way with 20 digs, while
Courtney Ysker and
Kayla Wallerich played great defense as well with 18 and 16 digs, respectively, and 84 digs as a team, a season high.
The Vikings close out the Black Hills State Tournament with a 4 p.m. match against Chadron State later today.
