Vikings drop second-straight game in overtime with 2-1 loss to Beavers

BOX SCORE MINOT, N.D. – In a highly-contested match, Augustana soccer lost 2-1 in overtime on Friday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.  The Vikings record fell to 8-5 (6-4 NSIC) with the loss.  Minot State improved its record to 4-6-2 (4-5-1 NSIC) with the victory.

The first half saw a defensive battle, with neither team being able to capitalize on an offensive opportunity.  Augustana was able to push its attack near the end of the half, but couldn't generate a score for their effort, resulting in a 0-0 tie at the end of the first 45 minutes of regulation.

The Vikings outshot the Beavers 5-3 in the first half, getting two shots on goal.  Minot State was unable to get a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes of play.

The first period saw some physical play, with both teams being called for four fouls in the period.

Kirsten Smith led Augustana in the first half with two shots, The Beavers' Jayden Montejano also put up two shots in the half.

Minot State broke the tie early in the second half, taking a 1-0 lead.  Emile Rebelo scored her first goal of the season when she took a loose ball in the middle of the field, and put it into the left side of the net during the 52nd minute of regulation.

The Vikings would tie the game at 1-1 in the 74th minute of the second half on a Maren Werth goal.  The senior – notching her 11th goal of 2013 on the play – took a pass from Haley Berner and put it past the keeper into the right side of the net.  Berner was credited with her first assist of the season on the goal.

Neither team was able to score for the remainder of the period, taking a 1-1 tie into overtime.

It didn't take long into overtime for the Beavers to come away the win, scoring the golden goal in the 94th minute of the match.  Zoe Fisher stole a misplayed ball from Ashley Limmer and struck it into the back of the net, securing the win for Minot State.  It was Fisher's third goal of the season and second game-winning goal in 2013.

For the match, Augustana was outshot by the Beavers 15-13, with each team getting eight shots on goal.

The Vikings were led by Smith's three shots, Kara Bartels and Stephanie Stevens each put up two shots for the Vikings.

Augustana looks to rebound on Sunday against U-Mary (3-9-1, 3-6-1 NSIC) at noon at the MDU Resources Bowl.
