Werth scores both goals for Vikings in 2-2 tie against U-Mary

BOX SCORE BISMARCK, N.D.Maren Werth scored both goals for Augustana on Sunday, despite heavy wind and snow flurries, in a 2-2 tie against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe U-Mary.  The tie puts the Vikings' record at 8-5-1 (6-4-1 NSIC).  The Marauders went to 3-9-2 (3-6-2 NISC) on the year.

Augustana came out aggressive early, taking a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the match.  Werth continued her goal-scoring assault on the 2013 season with her 12th goal of the year.  The Bloomington, Minn. native netted the opening goal of the contest from the six yards out in the middle of the field.  Kirsten Smith recorded her second assist of the season on the play.

U-Mary answered quickly with an Alex Bachman-Williams' goal in the 8th minute of regulation.  Bachman-Williams fired in her sixth goal of the year when she put in a rebound off a header by the Marauders into the back of the net from six yards out.

The Vikings reclaimed the lead at the 28:56 mark in the first period on another Werth goal.  The senior hooked up this time with Jessica Madson, who crossed the ball from the right side of the field, and the forward struck it in from just in front of the keeper, giving her two goals in the match and putting Augustana up 2-1.  Madson was credited with her third assist of the year with the pass to Werth.

Augsutana was able to hold off a big scoring chance by the Marauders in the 37th minute of the half.  Goalkeeper Ashley Limmer made a pair of dazzling saves to keep U-Mary from tying the game up, which allowed the Vikings to retain a 2-1 lead going into halftime.

The Marauders outshot Augustana nine to five in the first half.

U-Mary amped up its aggressiveness on offense in the second half.  In the 68th minute of play, the Marauders' Bachman-Williams recorded her second goal of the match, tying the game at 2-2.  The senior handled an Emily Christensen pass and struck it home for U-Mary.

Neither team was able to score for the rest of the half, taking a 2-2 tie into overtime after 90 minutes of action.

Both the Vikings and Marauders had scoring opportunities in the first overtime, but neither team capitalized as a result, going scoreless and forcing a second overtime.

In the second overtime, Augustana really pressed the action, hoping to create some scoring chances.  Werth missed a game-winning header just left in the in the 103rd minute off a beautiful Stephanie Stevens corner kick.

Kara Bartels had an opportunity minutes later, with a well-struck ball from just outside of the 18-yard box that U-Mary's Shelby Buttron managed to hold onto for the save in the final minute of play.

The contest finally came to its conclusion shortly after, with both teams tying at 2-2.

For the match, The Vikings took 19 shots, 13 on goal.  Werth's six shots led the way.  Katie Hurd also put up three shots, with Stevens and Bartels each getting two apiece.

Augustana returns to action next week with its final true road trip of the regular season.  On Saturday, the Vikings face Upper Iowa (11-3, 9-2 NSIC) at 1 p.m.  Augustana closes out the trip with a matchup against Winona State (10-2-2, 9-2 NSIC) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
