Holly Hafemeyer accounted for 21 kills and eight total blocks to lead Augustana to a four-set win over St. Cloud State. The Vikings improve to 17-4 overall, 9-4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, with their 25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 25-15 win, while the Huskies fall to 12-9, 6-7 in NSIC competition.
Hafemeyer was responsible for 26 points on the night after nearly breaking her career-best 24 kills she set earlier this season. The senior middle blocker had 19 kills through the first three sets and finished with an attack percentage of .475 (21-2-40). Sparking a six-point run in the fourth set, Hafemeyer tallied three blocks as part of her seven-block total in the final stanza.
Sophomore setter
Marissa Johnson doled out 52 assists, helping the Vikings to a .311 attack percentage (51-14-119) on the night.
Courtney Ysker added 15 kills and
Brittany Cech chipped in with nine and no errors.
Kayla Wallerich's 17 digs paired well with Augustana's nine blocks to limit the SCSU offense to a .185 attack percentage (34-14-108).
Augustana used a five-point surge to distance themselves from the Huskies and take the first set 25-17. Hafemeyer, Ysker, and Cech combined for 18 kills in the first set as the Vikings hit an even .500 to open the match.
The Vikings looked in complete control with a seven-point lead in the second set, but St. Cloud State went on a 10-2 run which eventually led to a 25-23 second-set win for the Huskies. Hafemeyer added six more kills in the second set, but the Vikings committed six errors during the SCSU run that erased Augustana's lead.
Coming out of intermission, Augustana built a four-point lead they would not relinquish and built a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-19 win in the third set. Again, Hafemeyer led the offense with six kills, and committed her first error of the night after tallying 17 error-free kills to start the match. Wallerich and Ysker scooped up 11 digs in the third set -- Ysker finished with 17 kills and 12 digs for her 13th double-double of the season.
Down 11-9 in the fourth set, Augustana reeled off 10 of the next 11 points behind five blocks to lead them to a 25-15 set win deciding the match. The Vikings only managed 10 kills in the final set, but nine blocks and digs held the SCSU offense to a -.038 attack percentage (8-9-26) in the fourth set.
The Vikings close out their three-match home stand against No. 4 Minnesota Duluth at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26 in the Elmen Center.
