Vikings' winning streak comes to an end in 4-2 loss

BOX SCORE ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Augustana soccer's seven-game winning streak came to an abrupt end on Friday in a 4-2 loss to St. Cloud.   The loss dropped the Vikings from the ranks of the unbeaten in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play and put their record on the year at 7-2 (5-1 NSIC).  With the win, the Huskies' record improved to 4-4-1 (1-4-1 NSIC).

St. Cloud came out fast to start the game, scoring in the sixth minute of regulation to take a 1-0 lead.  The Huskies' Ally Herod notched her second goal of the season on the play.  For Herod, she was assisted by Naomi Kolhoff.

St. Cloud struck again just minutes later, recording its second goal of the half, taking a 2-0 lead in the contest.  Taige Thoreson took a Gabby Fleck pass and headed it in the net at the 14:25 mark in the period.  The goal was Thoreson's second of the year.

The Huskies would make it 3-0 in the 37th minute of the first half.  Kayla Stevenson headed in the goal off a corner kick from Kara Dahmen.  The assist was Dahmen's first of the season.

Both teams played even for the rest of the half, with St. Cloud leading 3-0 at the break.

The Vikings were able to get off seven shots in the first half, two on goal.  The Huskies fired six shots, with four being on goal.

In the second the half, St. Cloud picked up right where it left off, scoring in the 54th minute of regulation.  Kara Espinosa delivered a header past Ashley Limmer on another Dahmen corner kick for her second goal of 2013.  The goal gave the Huskies its biggest lead of the match at 4-0.

Augustana finally got on the board in the 60th minute of regulation. Kirsten Smith scored her first goal of the year on an Annie Thoresen pass, which the Omaha, Neb. native headed past the keeper.  Thoresen recorded her first assist of 2013 on the pass.

The Vikings secured another goal at the 75:32 mark in the second half, cutting the St. Cloud lead to 4-2.  Thoresen - scoring her fifth goal of the season on the play - took a pass from Katie Hurd and drilled it in from 25 yards out.

Augustana's second half barrage came to a halt after that, as the Vikings were unable to complete the comeback bid, losing 4-2.

Augustana, despite the loss, outshot the Huskies 22-12 for the game.  The Vikings had 10 shots on goal, compared to St. Cloud's 7.  Hurd led the way for Augustana with seven shots.  Aleisha Oehlerking, Taylor Brownrigg, and Thoresen each had three shots.

The Huskies' four goals were a season-high for St. Cloud.  For Augustana, it was just the second time the Vikings have allowed multiple goals in a match this year.

Augustana looks to bounce back on Sunday against Minnesota Duluth (5-2, 4-1 NSIC).  The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at James S. Malosky Stadium.
