KEARNEY, Neb. - Michael Lowman eanred his first career tournament win and TJ North continued his hot start to the season by placing third in the elite division of the Holiday Inn Open hosted by Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday. Drake Fanslau placed fifth as the only other Viking to place in the top six.
Lowman, the lone Viking heavyweight, posted a perfect 4-0 record on the way to his first tournament title in the amateur division. Lowman advanced to the finals with a pair of decisions and a pin before taking the title with a second pin in 2:15 in the title bout.
At 125 pounds, North moved into the third round of the elite division with a pin in 2:08 then advanced to the semifinals with a 5-2 decision. Nebraska's Shawn Nagel upended North in the semis, by way of a 5-3 decision.
In the wrestle-back, North used two one-point decisions, including a win over Colorado State's Eric Hughes, to earn third place. North's record on the year improves to 11-3 with his 4-1 performance at the Holiday Inn Open.
Fanslau lost his first bout before reeling off wins in six of his next seven bouts to take fifth at 174 pounds in the amateur division. Fanslau lost to the eventual third-place finisher Brady Ayers in the opening round.
The redshirt freshman Fanslau pinned his first two opponents in the wrestle-back then won two major decisions before facing fellow Viking Logan Henning. Fanslau edged Henning 2-1 but lost 5-1 to Ayers for the second time. To take fifth-place honors, Fanslau pinned his opponent in 1:51.
The Vikings are idle next weekend before opening a busy weekend at a Northwestern-hosted triangular with Dakota Wesleyan on Dec. 5 in Orange City, Iowa. Augustana then heads to the MSU Moorhead Dragon Open on Saturday, Dec. 7 before squaring off with South Dakota State at the Sanford Pentagon on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m.
