Vikings' season comes to a close in 5-1 loss to Warriors

BOX SCORE WINONA, MINN. – Augustana soccer saw its season come to a close on Wednesday with a 5-1 loss to 19th-ranked Winona State in the quarterfinals of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament.  The loss gave the Vikings a 2013 final record of 10-8-1.  The Warriors (15-2-2) advance to the semifinals with the win.

In cold-weather conditions, Augustana was able to take adavantage of a quick start and jump out to an early lead on Winona State, but unable to hold on in the long run.

The Vikings got things rolling In the third minute of regulation, Aleisha Oehleriking was able to give Augustana a 1-0 lead on a header off a pass from Kirsten Smith.  For Oehlerking, it was her fifth goal of the year, tying a career high for goals in a season.  Smith was credited with her third assist of the season.

The Warriors would answer back shortly after, tying the game up at 1-1 in the 21st minute of the first half.  Jennifer DeRoo would score her third goal of 2013 on an Alaina Kne assist. 

Winona State would score its second goal of the match – the eventual game winner - in the 33rd minute of the half.  Shauna Rodman struck home her third goal of the season off an Alaina Kne pass, giving the Warriors a 2-1 lead over Augustana.

DeRoo would notch another goal, fourth of the season, on a rebound off a Warriors' shot, putting Winona State up 3-1 at the 34:36 mark in the first half of play.  Kne would be given her third assist of the contest on the scoring play.

With just seconds remaining before the half, Winona State would put up its fourth goal in the half on a goal by Taylor Zehren.  Zehren was able to head in a corner kick with one second left before halftime and gave the Warriors a 4-1 lead going into the break.

Winona State outshot the Vikings 11-6 in the first 45 minutes of play.

The second half saw a much more physical game as the Vikings showed the heart and resiliency that made them competitors this season, playing even with the No. 19 team in the country for most of the half.

The Warriors would score the only goal in the half, at the 55th minute of regulation on a Kati Baker goal, putting Winona State up 5-1 in the contest.

Augustana would continue to keep playing aggressive, but couldn't generate a goal on a couple of scoring chances they had in the second half, ultimately losing 5-1. 

Winona State finished the match with a 18-12 shot advantage.

For the Vikings, Maren Werth wraps up her historic 2013 season with a game-leading six shots in the match.  Katie Hurd fired three shots, and three other players each took one shot for Augustana.

For the Vikings, their season comes to an abrupt end after seeing several records fall throughout the course of the year.  Augustana saw its best start in team history by going 7-1.  The team also set team records in assists, points, points per game, and assists per game.
