BOX SCORE SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana nailed 10 3-pointers on its way to a 67-52 win over the University of Minnesota Duluth (5-14, 3-12 NSIC) on Friday night in Sioux Falls. Five different players hit from 3-point range as the Vikings (15-4, 11-4 NSIC) attempted a season-high 28 shots from behind the arc in the contest.
Augustana improves to 11-1 in home games this season, and extended its winning streak to five games.
Jamall Taylor finished the game matching his season-highs with 11 points and three 3-point field goals.
Daniel Jansen added a team-high 16 points, connecting on 5 of 6 from the field, including 2 of 2 from 3-point range. Jansen added four points at the free throw line.
Joe Burt finished with 11 points while hitting two 3-pointers and
Cameron McCaffrey added 10 points for the Vikings.
Jake Hottenstine led the Bulldogs with 18 points while Brett Ervin added 14.
Yuriy Malashenko had a good night off the bench finishing with five points and a season-high 11 rebounds.
Augustana finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field and 35 percent (10 of 28) from 3-point range. UMD was 20 of 52 (38 percent) from the field, including 0 of 15 from 3-point range.
For the fifth straight game Augustana dished out double-digits in assists led by McCaffrey's five. Malashenko added four assists for the Vikings in the game.
Minnesota Duluth took a 4-0 lead in the first two and a half minutes of the game before the Vikings woke up and went on a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 10-4 lead with 15:20 to play in the first half.
Malashenko gave Augustana a 13-6 lead coming into the game and knocking down a 3-pointer at 14:46. UMD answered by going on a mini 4-0 run to cut the lead to three at 13-10. The Vikings scored on two straight possessions to push the lead back to seven at 17-10.
The Bulldogs answered back and went on a 12-4 run to take a 23-21 lead after
Peter Crawford converted a 3-point play. The Vikings answered right away as Taylor nailed a 3-pointer to put Augustana up 24-23.
The score would end up tied six times in the final 6:14 of the first half, but the Bulldogs carried a 33-32 lead into halftime. The first half saw six tie scores and eight lead changes.
Augustana used the 3-pointer to hang with the Bulldogs in the first half as the Vikings hit four shots from behind the arc. Augustana shot 36 percent from the field in the first half and 28 percent from 3-point range, attempting 14 shots from long range.
UMD was 12 of 22 (54 percent) from the field in the first half and was 0 of 3 from 3-point range. The Bulldogs got to the free throw line 12 times in the half and connected on nine shots from the charity stripe.
Augustana got balanced scoring in the first half with eight players finding their way into the scorebook with baskets. McCaffrey finished with six points in the half while
Joe Burt and Taylor each added five.
Jake Hottenstine and Brett Ervin each scored 10 points for UMD in the first half. The Bulldogs won the boards in the half out-rebounding Augustana 19-12.
The two teams traded points throughout the first five and half minutes of the second half but the Vikings went in front by four at 43-39 after a 3-pointer by Taylor and a free throw by McCaffrey.
Taylor extended Augustana's lead to 46-39 and forced a UMD timeout after knocking down his third shot from 3-point range in the game with 12:26 left in the game. McCaffrey pushed the lead to 49-39 connecting on a 3-point play after driving and getting the foul.
The Vikings extended their lead to 12 after a 3-pointer by
Alex Richter and a basket by
Zach Huisken to make the score 56-44 with 7:28 to go.
Augustana would lead by as much as 17 points in the final minutes of the game eventually cruising to a 67-52 victory over the Bulldogs.
Minnesota Duluth won the rebound battle 36-31 as the Vikings improved to 5-2 in games where it gets out-rebounded by its opponent. The Bulldogs finished with 30 points in the paint while the Vikings scored 20 but Augustana was able to score 13 points off of 13 UMD turnovers.
Augustana finished the game with just seven turnovers, marking the fourth time in five games that the Vikings' turned the ball over less than 10 times.
