TUSCON, Ariz. – No. 8 Augustana split a pair of games at the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic in Tuscon, Ariz. on Friday. The Vikings (1-1) dropped the opener 1-0 to Southeastern Oklahoma State University before earning an 11-4 win over No. 2-ranked University of California-San Diego.
In game one, both teams finished with four hits but the Savage Storm plated a run in the top of the fourth inning and hung on for the win.
In the top of the fourth, Southeastern Oklahoma State started off the inning with a walk by Jessica Simmons. Simmons then stole second before Paige Priest delivered the game's only run on an RBI single to center field.
The Vikings left six runners on base in the game, once in scoring position in the bottom of the second. Janelle Trautmann, who pitched five innings for the Vikings, started off the bottom of the second with a single.
Chelsi Winskowski followed with a walk and
Emily Heinz moved both runners up a base on a sacrifice bunt.
The runners would be left stranded on base after a pop out and fly out to end the inning. Jacee Bennett tossed all seven innings for the Savage Storm earning the win in the circle to improve to 6-1 on the season. Bennett gave up four hits while striking out eight batters and walking one.
In the second game of the day for Augustana, the Vikings went on to upset the second-ranked team in the country in an 11-4 win over the University of California-San Diego.

Lindsay Spanton.

Theresa McMahon went 3 for 4 at the plate against UC San Diego and belted her 35th career home run to tie the school record. Traci Fransen hit 35 home runs from 2008-11.
Spanton and
Jenny Brown each had two hits for the Vikings in the win. After scoring four runs in the first, the Vikings tacked on five in the second inning, building a comfortable lead.
Augustana returns to action tomorrow morning, taking on 16th-ranked Central Oklahoma at 10 a.m. CT before squaring-off with Missouri-St. Louis at 3 p.m.
