TUCSON, Ariz. – Augustana edged Colorado Mesa, 3-2, before falling to Central Oklahoma 5-4 in the finals of the silver bracket at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Vikings come away from the tournament with a 4-2 record to open the season.
Augustana scored one run in consecutive innings beginning in the second and tallied a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth. CMU scored a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth, but the Vikings shut the Mavericks out the rest of the way to move on to the silver bracket finals.
Jenelle Trautmann hit her second home run of the season and
Jordan Schaffer cracked a double to highlight thte Vikings offensive performance.
In the championship game, Augustana jumped out to an early 4-1 lead after the second inning, but couldn't hold down the Central Oklahoma offense.
The Bronchos exacted revenge for the Vikings' 4-3, nine-inning win in pool play by scoring four unanswered runs to take a 5-4 lead which held for the rest of the game.
Trautmann hit another home run as the Vikings only managed four hits as a team.
The Vikings will be idle until their spring trip to the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla. beginning on March 10.
