Vikings lose heart breaker to stop 10-match winning streak

ORLANDO, Fla.
– The Augustana women's tennis team saw its 10-match winning streak come to a close when they lost a heartbreaker to ASA College by a score of 5-4.  The Vikings are now 10-1 on the season with this loss coming in the first of five matches on their spring trip.
 
Augustana split the singles matches, but were edged on the doubles side to lose the match 5-4.  Katie Jesperson was involved in the two most exciting matches, including a three-set affair at No. 1 singles.
 
Jesperson defeated Dayan Agasieva 7-5 in the first set but was edged 3-6 in the second.  In the tiebreaker, Jesperson emerged victorious with a 10-4 win.  Jess Richards dropped her opponent 6-1 in the first set and was given the match win when her opponent defaulted in the second set.
 
Michelle Wadas lost in close fashion, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3 singles. Hannah Gebauer evened up the team score with thrilling win at No. 4 singles.  The senior won consecutive sets in tiebreakers to remain undefeated on the year.  Gebauer's set scores were 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2).
 
Heather Sullivan and Liz Lewis were overmatched in the final two singles slots and the Vikings were even with the Avengers entering the doubles matches.
 
Richards and Gebauer continued to roll at No. 2 doubles, winning 8-4, but that was the lone doubles victory for the Vikings.  Sullivan and Jenna Helleberg fell at No. 3, 8-2. 
 
Jesperson and Wadas had a chance to take the team match, but after holding a 7-4 lead, the No. 1 duo fell 9-8 with a tiebreaker score of 7-5.
 
The Vikings will face Division III Central College at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow before squaring off against Division I Chicago State at 4:30 p.m.
