Vikings split with Wayne State on day one of NSIC action

BOX SCORE SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana split its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader of the season on Wednesday defeating Wayne State 7-3 in game one before dropping game two 7-3. Augustana is now 12-5 on the season while Wayne State is 10-6. Both teams are 1-1 in NSIC contests after the split.

GAME ONE
Augustana used five unearned runs and a big fourth inning to beat Wayne State 7-3 in the first game of a doubleheader.  Erin Kempf tallied two hits and five more Vikings recorded a base knock.  Jenelle Trautmann recorded the win to move to 11-3 on the season.

Augustana finally broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when they used two errors by Wayne State to score two runs.  Theresa McMahon reached on an error and moved to third on Jenny Brown's single with Brown advancing on the throw, setting up two runners in scoring position with one out.

Lindsay Spnaton's ground ball was muffed by the WSC second baseman which scored McMahon.  Trautmann then followed with an RBI groundout to second base to plate Brown and the Vikings led 2-0.

Miscues would allow the Wildcats to come back in the next half inning.  Three singles loaded the bases with no outs for the visitors and the leadoff runner scored on a Trautmann passed ball.  A hit batsman preceded a single through the left side and the Wildcats tied the score. A walk scored the final run of the inning as Trautmann was able to get two outs and leave the bases loaded.

Down, 3-2, the Vikings responded quickly. Chelsi Winscowski reached on an error and was moved to second by way of sacrifice bunt.  She was moved to third on a Carly Peterson single and driven home on McMahon's groundout to tie the score.

One inning later, the Vikings broke the game open with four runs.  Trautmann helped her own cause with a home run to centerfield.  Jordan Schaffer reached by error and Cassandra Kranz replaced her on second as a pinch runner.  Erin Kempf scored the fleet-footed Kranz on a single.  Winscowski piled on with a double to score Kranz, forcing a pitching change.

The new hurler couldn't slow down the Viking attack and Winscowski scored from third after Peterson walked and stole second forcing a throw to second.  The Vikings were finished on the offensive edn and Carley Pickett relieved Trautmann for the final two innings of work.

Pickett racked up four strikeouts while just surrendering two hits in her brief work for the sixth and seventh inning.  The Vikings pitchers collected 10 strikeouts while giving up just three walks.

GAME TWO
Wayne State scored six runs between the second and third innings in its game two win over the Vikings. The Wildcats finished the game with 13 hits while scoring seven runs. Four Wildcat batters picked up two hits in the game. Kylee Simpson was 2 for 4 at the plate with two RBI while Kaiti Williams delivered two hits and an RBI in the game.

Sara Scheffert tossed six innings for Wayne State in the win while giving up all three runs on five Augustana hits. Pickett was tagged with the loss for Augustana giving up all seven runs, six earned, on 13 hits.

Peterson was 2 for 2 at the plate for the Vikings scoring a run and picking up an RBI.  Brown collected a hit and extended her current hitting streak to 19 games.

Wayne State jumped out early with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second, but Augustana responded with two of their own in the bottom half.

Peterson knocked in Coufal who reached on a walk and McMahon drove home Peterson with a double to left field.  Brown singled to extend her streak, but the two-out Viking threat was neutralized by a lineout to left field.

Wayne State answered back, this time with four runs to put the Vikings away.  The Wildcats tallied three hits and two runs before recording an out. Two more would follow and the Vikings were in a 6-2 hole after 2.5 innings of play.

The Vikings couldn't respond through three more half innings and the Wildcats tacked on an insurance run in the top of six off a wild pitch.  Augustana mustered one more run in the final frame, but couldn't complete a comeback effort.

The Vikings are now tasked with hosting Northern State for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 29 to continue NSIC action.
